ITV has confirmed the future of hit show For The Love Of Dogs - following backlash to Alison Hammond taking over as presenter from the late Paul O'Grady.

The award-winning documentary series launched in 2012, following the staff and furry animals of Battersea Dogs And Cats Home.

This Morning star Alison, 51, began hosting the show following Paul's shock death in 2023.

Meanwhile, ITV has now revealed the programme is returning for another series - the third in Alison's tenure.

The latest outing will arrive on screens this spring - and will again feature heartwarming and inspirational stories.

Alison will again immerse herself in the day-to-day life of the rescue centre - from high energy pups in need of training, to more senior pooches looking for peace and quiet.

ITV has confirmed the future for its much-loved documentary series For The Love Of Dogs - which takes place at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home

This Morning star Alison Hammond (pictured) took over as presenter in 2024 - but did not initially receive a positive reception

Discussing news of the show's return, Alison said: 'I'm absolutely over the moon to be heading back to Battersea.

'My heart was truly stolen by the brave pups I met last time and I've been itching to get back, roll up my sleeves, and help these gorgeous animals find the love they deserve.

'There's a special kind of magic in seeing a dog's tail wag for the first time after a tough start and I can't wait to share that with everyone at home.'

Kate Teckman, Head of Development & Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment ITV commented: 'We're delighted that Alison is back at Battersea to bring viewers the moving and entertaining stories of the dogs getting back on their feet, getting their confidence back and getting ready for a new home.'

Peter Laurie, Battersea Chief Executive, said: 'Battersea is excited to welcome another series of For the Love of Dogs to TV screens this Spring, where Alison will once again be sharing the heart-felt stories of some of the dogs that have come into our care recently.

'Guaranteed not to be a dry-eye in the house, viewers will follow the journey of dogs of all ages, shape and size to find a home to call their own.'

Previously, Alison addressed the not initially positive reception she received upon joining For The Love Of Dogs.

Some viewers were critical of Alison and suggested the star lacks 'empathy' for the pooches featured.

She told Heat magazine: 'I was actually surprised with how much [trolling] I got for doing the show.

The original host was much-loved comedian and broadcaster Paul O'Grady, who passed away in 2023

'I could understand in the sense that Paul [O'Grady] was so loved, but people were saying "How can she do it when she doesn't have a dog? How can does she love dogs when she doesn't have one?"

'It's like saying, "How can you love children when you haven't got kids?" It's such a flawed argument for me, and all I would say is if you don't want to watch it, don't watch it.'

One posted on X: 'How come someone who DOES NOT OWN a dog present a show about dogs. At least Paul O'Grady absolutely loved dogs.'

Another commented: 'Fancy giving show about rehoming dogs to someone who has admitted they don't like dogs.'

Someone else penned: 'Is this the same Alison that doesn't like dogs?'

A fourth wrote: 'Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling that Alison is only pretending to be a dog person? She doesn't seem to show a natural love or genuine affection for them. She's definitely no Paul O'Grady! I'd love to see Clare Balding present the show instead.'

Alison previously fired back at critics who claimed she shouldn't be hosting the much-loved programme.

Having faced cruel trolling and continuous calls for her to be axed, she spoke directly to those criticising her.

Speaking to The Guardian, the Birmingham native said: 'People say Pete Wicks would be better than me at presenting For the Love of Dogs.

'He might be but I'm doing it. Deal with it! I know my worth. Besides, my mum would have been so proud.

'That's the reason I do this. She's my guiding light.'

Alison added to the publication that she has been 'doing a job that I adore to the best of my ability, trying to be better than I was yesterday.'
