The Great British Bake Off viewers returned on Tuesday night and viewers were left scratching their heads over one particular moment during the episode.

As the contestants returned to the famous tent, judge Prue Leith, 85, tasked the bakers with recreating the iconic school cake for the technical challenge.

As part of the technical challenge, which is the second challenge in the show, Prue asked the bakers to make one unusual element from scratch.

However, it wasn't just the delicious sponge cake and white icing the bakers were asked to make but they were also told to make the sprinkles from scratch.

Prue said: 'Elbow grease is needed for this, you are going to recreate a school cake. We want vanilla sponge, white icing, sprinkles and custard'.

Hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding revealed, 'The twist Prue has demanded is everything must be made from scratch, even the sprinkles!'

Noel joked: 'You will be making 1074 sprinkles'.

However the unusual creation was no task for Jasmine as she was awarded Star Baker but Jessica, who struggled, was the latest baker to exit the tent.

Shocked fans quickly took to X as they branded making sprinkles from scratch as 'ridiculous' and a 'bit tight'.

They wrote: 'Making the SPRINKLES by hand is a bit tight like'; Make the sprinkles?!;  Sprinkles from scratch, that’s ridiculous!';

'YEP! SCHOOL CAKE, But from scratch… no modern equipment, are they gonna ask them to mill the flour themselves?!?';

'You have to make sprinkles from scratch - YOU WHAT!'; Sprinkles from scratch, that’s ridiculous!'; So that's how you make sprinkles.... I had never thought about that before tonight..'

Once the bakers had finished creating the iconic school cake, contestant Jessica admitted, 'That was hard!'.

While Prue picked a part the bakers handmade sprinkles, 'There are some uneven looking sprinkles' while Paul Hollywood added, 'The sprinkles on top are interesting'.

Once judging the bakers technical challenge, Aaron came in second with Jasmine coming out on top as Prue said, 'Beautiful cake, sprinkles are excellent'.

Noel later joked: 'No one is ever going to make sprinkles by hand ever again!'

It comes after GBBO viewers were left screaming at their screens by a contestant's 'disgusting' habit last week.

The stars were tasked with baking their own signature dish, technical and showstopper as part of bread week.

The first challenge saw them bake monkey bread, followed by 12 glazed ring donuts and the final task was to create a sweet bread with three tiers.

While making their savory monkey bread, those watching at home couldn't help but take to social media to point out something that was bothering them.

Nadia, 41, from Liverpool, rocked a bright pink blouse and apron for filming, with her hair styled into a messy ponytail.

Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share that they had spotted her touching her hair and then proceeding to carry on baking her Italian monkey bread.

When judges Prue, Paul and Alison headed over to chat to her about her dish, she explained that it consisted of cream, sundried tomatoes, olives and wild garlic.

Prue picked a part the bakers handmade sprinkles, 'There are some uneven looking sprinkles' while Paul Hollywood added, 'The sprinkles on top are interesting'

Paul asked: 'You nicked that from a field?'

As she pushed her fringe away from her face, she simply replied: 'Yeah...'

Fans wrote: 'I really just wanna grab all of Nadia’s hair and tie it up properly!! #GBBO.'

'Stop touching your hair NADIA and then touching the food - disgusting!!!'

'It really bugs me that these women are just letting their hair freely go over the food like that.'

Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays on Channel 4 and is available to stream on channel4.com.
