At least three people were shot at a Maryland shopping center after several gunmen opened fire forcing terrified customers to flee for their lives.

The chaos unfolded at around 4.40pm on Friday afternoon in Northeast Baltimore near the Coldspring Shopping Center, according to CBS Baltimore. 

The victims were two 24–year–old men and another 25–year–old man, the outlet reported. 

They were taken to the hospital with with life–threatening injuries and listed in stable condition. 

City police were called to the area near the HipHop Fish & Chicken fast food chain at the mall to reports of a shooting, SKY 11 reported.

Morgan State University police said that three unknown suspects had displayed and then fired a weapon, according to the Baltimore Sun. 

After that, the suspects fled in unknown directions, per a campus police notice cited by the outlet. The university is located a few blocks from the mall.

Baltimore police are still searching the area for victims after the shooting.

A local who lives across the street from the mall, Elouise Lemon, said she saw three men lying down in the parking lot when she went out to her porch.

'It's so sad all young men got shot like that,' Lemon told the Baltimore Sun. 'I hope they all get well.' 

Lemon said she recognized the three men as people who often sat in chairs outside of the shopping center plaza. 

Rose Douglas, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 50 years, said that the area 'never had this kind of problem.' 

Law enforcement received multiple calls regarding numerous shots fired at the shopping center.

More than 30 large–caliber shell casings were counted on the strip mall's pavement after the shooting, the Baltimore Banner reported. 

A mass casualty alert was sent out following the attack, according to SKY 11. 

In response to the triple shooting, police temporarily shut down East Cold Spring Lane, where the mall is, in both directions. 

The street was later reopened around 6.25pm local time. 

Authorities also closed one southbound lane of Loch Raven Boulevard after the shooting.

The Maryland Transit Administration announced the LocalLink 28 bus was temporarily detouring in both directions until 7pm because of police activity, as well.

More than 25 yellow evidence markers had been placed on the shopping plaza near where the shooting happened.

A Maryland State Police helicopter could be seen at the scene, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The Baltimore Police's Forensics team was also present immediately after the shooting. 

Police officers and detectives have been spotted going in and out of the businesses in the area.
