Several passengers aboard an air-conditioned Mumbai local train complained of suffocation after the train’s cooling system failed while it remained halted at Mulund station on Monday (July 13, 2026).One commuter was hospitalised after falling unconscious.

Videos of passengers struggling to breathe inside the train went viral on social media. According to Railway officials, the incident occurred during peak hours at around 9.26 a.m. when the AC-system of the 8.33 a.m. Titwala-CSMT local developed a technical error, shutting down the cooling system.

As the automatic doors of the train remained shut and the coach was crowded, several passengers experienced discomfort. “Three commuters suffered breathing difficulties and complained of suffocation,” a Central Railway official said.

The passenger who fainted has been identified as 43-year-old Fahim Ansari. He was taken to the hospital, treated and discharged later. Two women passengers also experienced discomfort, recovered and continued their journeys. 

The train was discontinued after reaching Kurla station and sent to the workshop for repairs, Central Railway officials said.

“The experts are examining why cooling system failed and also looking into why the two adjacent systems did not automatically take over the load when the primary cooling system had a problem,” Central Railway spokesperson Swapnil Nila said. He added that the operator in charge stated that overcrowding prevented him from reaching the control switch.
