On 16 June, ETF railway affiliates visited the Train Testing Lab in Berlin at the invitation of FP5-FDFTO to learn more about the development and deployment of the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC).

During the visit, participants observed live demonstrations of DAC testing and received updates on preparations for its installation on pioneer trains and the wider rollout of the technology across the rail freight sector. Affiliates also had the opportunity to experience the technology firsthand by coupling and uncoupling trains equipped with DAC.

The visit provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions with project experts and leaders on the potential benefits of DAC for rail freight operations and railway workers. ETF affiliates raised questions about the functioning of the coupler, staffing requirements during the transition period, and the significant investments needed to ensure a successful large-scale deployment.

The Digital Automatic Coupler has the potential to improve both safety and efficiency in rail freight transport. ETF emphasised the importance of involving workers and their representatives in the development and implementation of new technologies. Their expertise is essential to ensuring that safety standards are maintained, the technology meets operational needs, and the transition is fair and beneficial for all railway workers.

As the sector moves towards digitalisation and automation, social dialogue and worker involvement remain key to delivering a successful and just transition.
