David Bernard dirigiert eine spannende Neuaufnahme von  der 3. Symphonie von Saint-Saëns. Er kann die Musik in den schnellen Sätzen ebenso anheizen, wie er das Poco Adagio elegant und sensuell ausreizt. Da gibt es also einerseits ein sehr virtuoses Orchesterspiel (was die Musik durchaus verträgt), und andererseits einen passenden  melancholischen Charme.

Bernard lässt das Park Avenue Chamber Orchestra detailreich in schönsten Farben spielen und sehr geschmeidig.

Der erste Satz erklingt recht zügig, während der zweite Satz breit durchgeatmet wird. Das anschließende Allegro moderato wird sehr vital und extrem tänzerisch, manchmal direkt enthusiastisch musiziert.

Den opulent und wiederum sehr tänzerisch gestalteten Schlusssatz durchzieht ein gutes Drive.

Die Aufnahme ist höhenbetont und vor allem die hohen Streicher haben einen weit ausschwingenden  silbrigen Klang, von dem sich die Blechbläser und die dunkel gefärbte Orgel gut abheben. Manchmal stechen die Holzbläser etwas zu sehr hervor.

David Bernard conducts a thrilling new recording of Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3. He is just as adept at energizing the music in the fast movements as he is at bringing out the full elegance and sensuality of the Poco Adagio. So on the one hand, there is highly virtuosic orchestral playing (which the music certainly can handle), and on the other, a fitting melancholic charm.

Bernard guides the Park Avenue Chamber Orchestra to play with rich detail, beautiful colors, and great fluidity.

The first movement is performed at a brisk pace, while the second movement is played with a broad, expansive breath. The subsequent Allegro moderato is full of vitality and extremely dance-like, at times performed with outright enthusiasm.

The opulent and, once again, very dance-like final movement is infused with a strong sense of drive.

The recording emphasizes the high frequencies, and the high strings in particular have a silvery tone that resonates widely, against which the brass and the dark-toned organ stand out well. At times, the woodwinds stand out a bit too much.
