Manny Malhotra will have rookie assistant coaches for his first year as an NHL bench boss with the Vancouver Canucks.

The Canucks announced Friday morning that Ryan Mougenel, Jordan Smith and Jason Krog will be Malhotra’s main lieutenants this coming season.

Krog, 50, has been a skills coach with Vancouver the past two campaigns, and that’s the largest part of the work at the NHL level.

Malhotra, 46, has seven seasons as an NHL assistant under his belt, with three campaigns with Vancouver under Travis Green (2017-20) and then four with the Toronto Maple Leafs as part Sheldon Keefe’s staff (2020-24).

Malhotra was hired to guide Vancouver on June 2 after leading the team’s AHL Abbotsford Canucks farm team the past two seasons. He replaced Adam Foote, who was fired after a single season at the helm of the parent Canucks.

“When we started this process with Manny, we wanted to find quality people first and foremost, who are good teachers and have intelligent hockey minds,” Vancouver general manager Ryan Johnson said in a news release Friday. “We have assembled a group that can help us build a solid foundation, connect with both our veterans and younger players, and put in place the system and style of play that Manny wants to see on the ice.”

Mougenel, 50, has been on the staff of the AHL’s Providence Bruins the past eight seasons, with the last five as head coach.

This past season, he was named winner of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s top coach after guiding Providence to first place in the regular season with a 54-16-2-0 record, which was good enough for the fourth-highest win percentage in league history.

He was promoted to head coach in Providence on Aug. 13, 2021, and compiled a 217-103-26-14 record — the best mark in the AHL over the last five years.

Providence had a first-round bye in the playoffs this year and lost in four games to the Springfield Thunderbirds in the best-of-five second round.

Smith, 40, has been a Malhotra assistant the past two years with the AHL’s Canucks. Before that, he was an assistant for two years with Springfield.

Krog wrapped up an 18-year pro career as a player in 2015-16. He played four games with the NHL Canucks in 2008-09.

The team also named Andrew Shaw, 36, as assistant to the video coach. He had been the video coach in Abbotsford the past two seasons.
