A wounded Rottweiler was found dumped inside a wheelie bin in the early hours of the morning.

A member of the public was walking through Keirle Park in Manly, on Sydney's northern beaches, last Thursday when they discovered the young male dog.

The canine had a deep wound on the right side of its body.

RSPCA NSW said the dog was also in 'very poor body condition with overgrown nails' when taken to the vet, but is now in good care.

'The Rottweiler is currently in a stable condition and receiving required veterinary treatment,' a spokesman said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

'RSPCA NSW Inspectors are urging members of the public with any information, including potential CCTV footage, to please come forward.'

An RSPCA spokesman told Daily Mail the culprit could face animal cruelty charges, leading to fines or imprisonment if found.

'Animal dumping is a specific offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act NSW 1979 (POCTAA),' he said.

'Individuals found guilty of abandonment under POCTAA face up to 6 months of imprisonment, fines of up to 50 penalty units (about $5,500), or both.'

Aussies immediately slammed the mystery dog owner.

'How could someone even think of doing that to a poor defenceless animal,' one said.

'What an absolute heartless act, hope they are found and get what they deserve,' a second said.

'Putting an injured dog in a bin, can it get any lower?' a third said.

Others felt there needed to be tougher laws.

'There needs to be serious laws brought in with lengthy jail time and life ban for abuse of animals,' one said.

'Not just jail time, but jail with hard labour, no TV, no internet, no gymnasium, no perks of any kind. Six days hard physical work with one day off,' a second said.

'If the punishment doesn't fit the crime, this will continue to happen to voiceless animals,' a third said.
