After a slightly delayed part delivery, VoxelMatters has finally finished reviewing the Centauri Carbon from Elegoo, which, once up and running, performed beyond our expectations. Not because it’s flawless, but because it consistently delivers performance that feels out of sync with its price – while simultaneously exposing a few details that suggest the product hasn’t been fully polished yet. After extended use, the impression is simple: this is a genuinely capable machine that feels like it should cost more than it does, even if it occasionally reminds you where the savings came from.

Setup and calibration

Setup is a good example of this duality. Calibration takes a while, but it’s almost entirely hands-off. You start the process, walk away, and return later to find the bed and the Z offset is handled without touching a screw. “Out of the box” is accurate, just not immediate. Once it’s done, though, it stays done. First layers become boringly consistent, and there’s no creeping need for adjustment over time, which counts for more than fast onboarding.

Speed, structure, and material reality

Speed is where expectations need managing. The advertised 500 mm/s is technically achievable, but in practice, filament physics tap out well before the mechanics do. At those extremes, extrusion simply can’t keep up, and surface quality suffers. The Centauri Carbon is far happier around 200 mm/s, depending on filament choice, and at those speeds, it maintains quality impressively well. There’s no sense of the frame shaking itself apart, vibration compensation works quietly in the background, and ghosting is notably absent. Ironically, the machine often sounds more aggressive than it actually is – especially when idle, where fan noise makes it feel oddly “busy” even when doing nothing.

Material handling is one of the printer’s stronger points. PLA behaves predictably, PETG strings in the way PETG always does, but engineering materials are where the Centauri Carbon starts to feel serious. ABS and ASA run well thanks to the enclosure, and both nylon and carbon-fiber-filled nylon print cleanly and without drama. CF nylon in particular stands out: no fuzzy surfaces, no temperature instability, just clean prints. Shipping the printer with a hardened steel nozzle as standard is an appreciated choice here – it avoids the usual “upgrade on day one” ritual and lets abrasive filaments run without hesitation.

Every day printing and enclosure

Print quality stays consistent across use cases. Large cosplay parts, functional brackets, and small detailed prints all come out as expected, with bridging better than anticipated and first layers reliably clean. Adhesion on the textured PEI plate is excellent – sometimes aggressively so, especially with ABS brims – but that’s a trade most users will happily accept over lifting. The smooth plate exists, but in practice, the textured side never really leaves the machine.

The enclosure does real work, both for thermal stability and for smell management when printing ABS. It’s not industrial filtration, but it’s effective enough to be appreciated. The user interface is similarly solid: the touchscreen is responsive, menus make sense, and navigating print history or settings is straightforward. The built-in camera is also surprisingly good, with better frame rates than some more established competitors, and timelapse generation is painless – although storage fills quickly and older footage quietly disappears.

Where the experience stumbles most noticeably is lighting. The internal LEDs are dim to the point of being actively annoying. Combined with the glass door, visibility inside the chamber is poor enough that routine maintenance often means opening the door or using a flashlight. It’s particularly frustrating because the camera itself is capable, yet handicapped by the printer’s own lighting choices.

Mechanically, the frame feels solid, belt tensioners are genuinely set-and-forget, and there’s no sense of instability even during faster prints. Small quality-of-life features do exactly what they’re meant to: the nozzle wiper actually wipes, waste gets caught where it should, and background systems stay in the background. The side-mounted filament holder is also a good decision, although the filament path angle is tight enough to make manual loading awkward and raises long-term concerns about PTFE wear – something that already showed early signs during testing.

Shortcomings and the bigger picture

Two real-world issues deserve mention. The first was a genuine hardware fault: a failed MOSFET on the toolhead PCB caused the hotend to heat uncontrollably on power-up, even with no print running. Credit where it’s due, though – Elegoo support diagnosed the issue properly and sent us the replacement part, afterwhich the system worked smoothly.

The second issue is harder to understand. Network traffic from the printer while idle was unusually high – around 28 GB in 48 hours in one case, with other users reporting far more over longer periods. Disconnecting the printer from the internet immediately stopped the problem. Whatever is happening in the background, it’s aggressive enough to disrupt busy networks and would be quickly noticed in a print-farm environment. This is the clearest sign that the software side of the product still needs tightening.

Despite all of that, the Centauri Carbon leaves a positive impression. It feels unfinished in places – noise behavior, lighting, network handling – but the core of the machine is strong. Strong enough, in fact, that it’s easy to imagine running several of them side by side. And that, more than any spec sheet or marketing claim, says something important about what Elegoo has built here.
