Pixar Animation’s Toy Story 5 remained in control of the domestic weekend box office through June 28 with $70 million in ticket sales, upping its tally to near $300 million in North America and $585 million globally after less than two weeks.

The totals easily dwarfed two theatrical newcomers, DC Studios’ Supergirl with $38 million in revenue, and Paramount’s Jackass: Best and Last with $8.2 million in projected revenue — both films performing well-below industry estimates.

“This is a weak opening for a new superhero film,” David A. Gross, analyst with FranchiseRE, wrote in a post about Warner’s follow-up to last year’s Superman. “The weekend figure is below average for the genre, with lukewarm critics’ reviews and audience scores.”

Gross says that among recent superhero movies with female leads, the opening for Supergirl is half of Black Widow ($81.4 million in July 2021), but better than Madame Web at $15.3 million in Feb 2024).

The analyst says that following the blockbuster successes of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad with Margot Robbie that made $747 million worldwide in August 2016, DC Comics’ Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot that finished with $822 million in August 2017, and Marvel’s Captain Marvel with Brie Larson that earned $1.13 billion in March 2019, the genre fell off a cliff, with their sequels down from 74% to 82%.

“They were disasters,” wrote Gross. “You’ll hear general explanations like ‘the audience lost interest.’ Yes, they did. But no one has been able to explain why it happened so suddenly and so completely. Why female superheroes in particular, after their sensational starts? We don’t understand it either.”

Meanwhile, Gross contends that even with a disappointing opening weekend, the fifth installment in the “Jackass” franchise will make money — based in part on the movie legacy cast of misfits, including Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O and Wee Man, among others.

“The movies have been inexpensive from the start, and this one cost an estimated $10 million to produce, so it should be profitable, even without strong overseas business,” Gross wrote.

Focus Features’ Obsession remained a draw among moviegoers in its seventh weekend, adding $9.8 million in ticket sales — upping its domestic tally to $234 million domestically and $370 million globally.

Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi drama Disclosure Day added $8.1 million in third weekend revenue, upping its total to more than $94 million across North American screens and $200 million worldwide.
