The 1990s were a period of transition for the action-movie genre, as filmmakers increasingly combined practical stunts with visual effects and budding CGI to push the limits of credibility. Director Chuck Russell’s entertaining Eraser from 1996 is a perfect example of the trend, thrusting a typical Arnold Schwarzenegger hero character into a series of over-the-top but inventive action set pieces. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that the story is infused with an extra hint of sci-fi realism to give it that extra oompf.

Schwarzenegger plays John Kruger, a U.S. Marshal with the witness protection program who specializes in faking the deaths of high-profile witnesses and giving them new identities, erasing their old lives and making them disappear. His latest assignment is a whistleblower (Vanessa Williams) at a high-tech firm who informs the authorities that the company is selling experimental weapons to international terrorists.

The weapon in question is a hand-held rifle version of a rail-gun, the plot device the film is perhaps best remembered for. Kruger successfully stashes his witness away, but his plans go awry when it turns out the weapons deal is part of a conspiracy involving higher ups at the defense department.

The plot proceeds more or less as expected for a Schwarzenegger movie, providing the groundwork for a number of effective action sequences. The most remembered are a scene in which Kruger must escape a burning plane while grabbing a free-falling parachute in mid-air (shades of the opening scene of Moonraker), and an ambush at a New York zoo involving a den of hungry crocodiles. All provide the requisite opportunities for appropriate (and cheesy) quips.

Russell in the new 4K bonus materials discusses how he was intent on giving the film a strong character focus to set it apart from Schwarzenegger’s typical action roles, while also upping the ante of the action scenes (while giving viewers a perspective of wondering what they would do in a similar scenario).

The film is given some extra gravitas by a heavyweight cast that includes James Caan as Kruger’s mentor, and James Coburn as their no-nonsense boss, plus smaller but notable performances from James Cromwell, John Slattery (“Mad Men”), Danny Nucci (who also appeared as doomed characters in The Rock the same year and Titanic a year later), and the late Robert Pastorelli (best known as the house painter from “Murphy Brown”) as another of Kruger’s erased witnesses.

The film generally looks pretty good in 4K, but the seams of its hybrid nature are readily apparent as the process shots are starting to show their age, particularly in the airplane sequence, while the CG in the crocodile attack remains a bit choppy.

The 4K release of Eraser comes with two new retrospective featurettes that explore the context of the film both in terms of action movie history and Schwarzenegger’s career: the six minute “Reinventing the Modern Action Hero — The Evolution of Arnold” and the eight-and-a-half-minute “’ 90s Action Thriller Reimagined.”
