A suspect is dead after an RCMP officer-involved shooting in Cold Lake Thursday afternoon.

It’s the latest fatal RCMP officer-involved shooting in the province in a year.

“On June 25, 2026, at 4:48 p.m., Cold Lake RCMP received a domestic call for service. RCMP officers attended and determined the suspect had a firearm; the two occupants of the residence were able to flee the residence and were safe,” said a release issued by the Alberta RCMP on Friday.

“Communication attempts were unsuccessful, and therefore the Emergency Response Team was called to assist. An altercation occurred with police in which at least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was declared deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during this altercation,” the release said.

In compliance with legislative requirements, the Police Review Commission CEO was immediately notified, launching an independent investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

“The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators. Events like this are difficult for everyone involved,” the release said.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident, the release said.

“RCMP training, policy, police response, and the officer’s duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP is, of course, fully co-operating with ASIRT.”

According to releases filed by the RCMP, there have been a handful of RCMP officer-involved shootings in the province in the past year.

In two other instances, the officer-involved shootings resulted in the death of the suspect.

On July 27, 2025, Lac La Biche RCMP responded to a disturbance at a local residence, according to an RCMP release.

A male suspect attacked one of the officers with a knife and one of the officers shot the man. Officers attempted life saving efforts, however, the suspect died at the scene.

On July 18, 2025, Grande Prairie RCMP located an erratic driver. When an attempt was made to stop the vehicle, it fled, according to an RCMP release.

The vehicle soon became stuck in the mud. When officers interacted with the male driver, he produced a firearm. At least one officer discharged their service weapon, and the suspect was struck. Officers attempted life saving efforts and STARS was notified, and the suspect was deceased at the scene.
