Oppo has just launched its new Reno 16 series which offers some solid upper-mid-range specs and a nice design, but also a neat “Bubble” screen accessory that, man, would just be so much better if this phone had Qi2 magnets inside.

The Oppo Reno 16 and Reno 16 Pro mostly iterates over last year’s Reno 15 series that we went hands-on with. Reno 16 Pro packs a MediaTek Dimensity 8550 Super paired with 12GB of RAM on the global market while Reno 16 has Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 and 8GB of RAM. The Pro has a 6,700 mAh battery while the base has a 6,000 mAh cell, with both devices getting bigger batteries in Oppo’s home market of China.

Both have 6.32-inch FHD+ displays, 144Hz on the Pro and 120Hz on the base. The other main difference between the two is in the camera department, where the Reno 16 has a 50MP main camera and the Pro has a 200MP shooter. 50MP sensors then make up identical ultrawide, telephoto, and selfie cameras on both devices. The design is also pretty much the same between the two.

Android 16 runs out of the box with ColorOS on top.

The Oppo Reno 16 will start at €899 in Europe, while the Pro will start at €1,099, both launching on July 3.

But the thing that really caught our eye here is Oppo’s new “Bubble” accessory, a wireless display that pairs to the phone and can act as a viewfinder for the camera, letting users more easily use the rear camera for selfies or group shots, as it works up to 10m (33ft~) away.

It even magnetically attaches to the back of the phone!

Well, assuming you have a case.

Oppo’s Pete Lau directly calls this out, yet Reno 16 buyers – or any other Oppo buyers – won’t be able to use the accessory like this without a case installed. That is, unless they stick an adhesive magnet ring to the phone, which Oppo says, in a buried footnote, is included with the Bubble.

Sigh…

Anyway, the accessory itself looks cool, and will cost €129 extra.
