Taco 'bout value!
Chipotle is rolling out a limited-time $2.50 taco 'happy hour' as it looks to tempt back cost-conscious customers amid ongoing frustration over rising fast-casual prices.
The trial is being run in select markets including Kansas City, Missouri; Orlando, Florida and Tampa, Florida, where diners can pick up the discounted deal between 2pm and 5pm, Monday through Friday.
Dubbed the 'Power Up with Chipotle' promotion, the offer is aimed at the after-school and mid-afternoon crowd - pitched as a quick bite between classes, a pre-practice snack, or a casual meet-up with friends.
Customers taking part can order either soft or crispy tacos and choose any protein, giving the deal a relatively flexible build-your-own format compared with standard menu pricing.
But there is a catch: the promotion is strictly in-restaurant only, meaning customers cannot order the discounted tacos through the Chipotle app, website, or third-party delivery platforms.
The test is currently scheduled to run through June 2, 2026, with the company using the rollout to gauge demand in a handful of pilot locations before deciding whether to expand it further.
In Kansas City, where the deal is being tested, a single taco typically costs between $3.50 and $4.05 - meaning the $2.50 price point represents a noticeable cut for budget-minded diners.

Chipotle has over 4,000 locations, making it one of the most popular fast-casual Mexican food chains
Scott Boatwright was named the Chipotle CEO in November 2024
The move comes as Chipotle continues to navigate a tricky pricing environment, with many fast-casual chains facing pushback from customers who feel menu prices have climbed too sharply in recent years, even as ingredient and labor costs remain elevated.
Chipotle has reported slowing comparable sales growth in its most recent earnings, with executives pointing to a more cautious consumer and weaker traffic trends, even as overall revenue has remained resilient compared to many peers in the fast-casual space.
Scott Boatwright, the chain's CEO, was recently asked about long-running complaints that Chipotle's once-heaping bowls and burritos have been quietly shrinking.
'You should ask for a little more,' Boatwright told Yahoo Finance's Power Players podcast. 'It has always been our brand ethos and it is still to this day, we serve big beautiful bowls and burritos.'
'Full stop, no questions asked. If you want more, just ask the team member. I promise you there's never a team member on that line that's going to say no.'
It is not the first time a Chipotle executive has commented on disappointing portions. In 2024, former CEO Brian Niccol - who is now chief at Starbucks - said that Chipotle had found more than 10 percent of its 3,500 locations were scoring poorly on portion sizes.
'We'll invest in it, and we'll figure out how to make sure we consistently do it every time,' he said, adding that the company was 'committed to making this investment to reinforce that Chipotle stands for a generous amount of delicious, fresh food at fair prices for every customer visit.'
Chipotle has over 4,000 locations, making it one of the most popular fast-casual Mexican food chains. Compared with other fast-casual eateries, Chipotle has generally outperformed rivals like Sweetgreen and Cava on scale and profitability, but is facing similar pressure industry-wide as consumers trade down more frequently to cheaper quick-service options.
