The price of petrol and diesel has been a stressful subject over the past few months due to reports of fuel storages as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. However, motorists will be happy to hear that the price of diesel has taken its biggest fall in over two decades, according to new data.
In June, it was found that the average price of diesel fell by nearly 17p per litre, which is the largest drop in a single month since 2000. However, while the new record will take some pressure off drivers, experts from RAC have warned that prices still aren't down to normal levels.
Analysis of RAC Fuel Watch data has revealed that the average price of diesel sat at 183.75p at the start of June. However, this has since tumbled down to 167.14p, which is a difference of 16.6p.

This price drop was seen to exceed the previous largest fall by 4.69p. The last record was reportedly set in May 2023, with a drop of nearly 12p, almost a year after oil prices started soaring due to the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the average price of petrol was also seen to drop in June by nearly 8p per litre (7.97p). Falling from 159.37p to 151.40p, this is reportedly the seventh greatest monthly price drop for petrol in the last 26 years.
From these reductions in price, the RAC estimates that petrol drivers will save £4.40 on a typical 55-litre family car, while diesel cars will now pay £9 less than at the start of June. These savings were made possible by the barrel of oil price dropping from $94.98 (£71.55) at the beginning of June to just $72.92 (£54.94) on June 30.
However, it should be noted that the pump price reduction will vary across the country. While the big four supermarkets have seen the average price of diesel dropping by as much as 19p, this was only seen to reduce by around 14p at motorway services.
By contrast, data shows that unleaded petrol has fallen by 8p at services, while prices sit slightly higher at supermarkets with a 7p reduction.
RAC's head of policy Simon Williams said: "June has been a far better month for drivers on the back of the announcement of a deal between the US and Iran to end the conflict. The price of oil has fallen dramatically and prices at the pumps have reflected that."
However, he also shared how these numbers do not mean that fuel prices have reduced to normal levels seen before the Middle East conflict.
Simon explains: "While diesel dropping 17p in a month is very positive, it’s also important to realise that its average price shot up 49p a litre from the end of February to 191.54p on 15 April, which equates to a rise of more than a penny a day. So, the cost of the fuel today remains far higher than it was at the start of the war.
"Fortunately, the oil price is now in the low-$70s range which is only $10 above the average of the first two months of the year. At the time the conflict began drivers had average prices of 132p for unleaded and 142p for diesel, so we’re still some way off those levels."
As it stands, the UK-wide mean average price for petrol stands at 151.40p on June 30. However, the most commonly seen price on forecourts across the UK is slightly lower at 149.9p.
Meanwhile, the average price of diesel is currently 167.14p, but this has generally been more expensive at forecourts sitting at 169.9p.
