More and more Hamilton County constituents are concerned about the contradiction between the one-year countywide moratorium and the already on-track Oracle data centers within Chattanooga’s city limits.

Why is it that Oracle data centers in Chattanooga city limits can move forward with the company sending in parts for the project before the lease agreement is even public, but data centers in unincorporated areas of the county require a one-year moratorium? Mayor Wamp says that data centers should go in rural Alabama.

Why do rural Alabamians have to have their water and air poisoned? Is this because of critical votes needed in the August election in the rural parts of Hamilton County? 

The one-year (too short) moratorium and the planned data centers downtown do not serve the best interests of constituents. We need County Commissioners and Mayor Wamp to hold regularly-scheduled public sessions to help inform policy reflective of our needs. 

Strategically-placed moratoriums for specific parts of our county only kick data centers one street or district over. We need elected officials to sincerely collaborate with citizens across Hamilton County to ensure community-led development of new projects, whether they include data centers or not.

In Nashville and across the country, billionaire tech monoliths are strong-arming local governments to place their data centers in their municipalities.  AI is not going away, so it is essential that our local government officials partner with citizens to carefully and thoughtfully plan the establishment of data centers.
