The manager and brother of a teenage soccer star who went on a drug and alcohol-fuelled crime spree plans to leave the country if released from prison.

Kuol Mawien Kuol, 26, faced Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Wednesday having been found guilty of a series of offences including fraud, drug trafficking and possession.

The brother of Socceroos star Garang Kuol, 19, has been remanded in custody since June 29, 2023, after he spent almost a year on the run when he skipped bail.

His spree started by defrauding NAB customers - including a 95-year-old WWII veteran - of over $121,000 while working as a teller at a branch in Shepparton.

While on bail for those charges, he tried to sell cocaine to undercover police, used counterfeit money to buy a PlayStation 5 and was found in possession of cannabis.

Despite tighter bail conditions, Kuol fled Victoria to Sydney where he claims to have mediated an offer for his brother to sign with English Premier League team, Newcastle United, for $500,000 and taunted police of his whereabouts.

Defence barrister Damian Fragapane said Kuol now plans to leave Australia after his release from jail to put years of offending 'behind him' and start with a clean slate.  

Three victims of his fraud were aged in their 70s and 80s and the oldest was a man robbed of $28,200.

The 95-year-old World War II returned serviceman, who was Kuol's most targeted victim, was robbed from his war pension account in six hits of between $500 and $9200 over eight weeks around Christmas 2020.

Kuol also stole $2000 from an 84-year-old woman, who had been a NAB customer since 1969, while she was talking to him at her Shepparton branch.

A clinical psychologist who treated Kuol in prison found he was suffering from PTSD, anxiety and depression after a traumatic upbringing in Sudan.

The court heard he was separated from his parents at the age of five before coming to Australia. 

Kuol returned to his birth country in his late teenage years - which has since split in two following a brutal civil war -  to reunite with family only for a number of them to die soon after.  

The mental health issues were only worsened after watching a friend die during a work accident.

Mr Fragapane told the court his client was on a good life-path with a job and an income but had made poor choices after falling in with the 'wrong crowd'.

Kuol turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of his childhood and teenage years, filled with 'death, violence ... and separated from his parents', his barrister said.    

He added that his client was remorseful for his actions and had been clean from drugs and alcohol since his arrest at The Star Casino, Sydney, in July.

Mr Fragapane urged the court to show leniency due to Kuol's mental health issues and consider releasing him as he had already spent a year in prison.

However, Magistrate Adriano Serratore had major concerns over the chance of reoffending if Kuol was released without condition forcing him into rehabilitation.

Mr Serratore said Kuol's offences were 'serious examples' of deceiving police that needed to be addressed.

He twice used his brother's driver's licence to get out of a speeding fine while suspended from driving and on another occasion had a friend report for bail as him.

The magistrate said if he released Kuol without conditions then nothing would stop him from returning to a life of crime and putting the public in danger.

Instead, Mr Serratore ordered to be reviewed for a community corrections order which could see him receive the help he needs and keep him from leaving the country.

The matter was adjourned until Friday morning when the 26-year-old will be sentenced. 

That night his brother Garang is expected to line up for Newcastle against the A-League All-Star in an exhibition match at the MCG. 

And the following day, his 22-year-old brother Alou will take to the field for Central Coast Mariners in the A-League Grand Final against Melbourne Victory.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Garang Kuol or Alou Kuol.
