J.J. Watt is defending his wife’s name — and her accomplishments.

The former star defensive end of the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals took issue with a social media post from Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake. The team had posted a photo of the football icon and and wife Kealia Watt on July 15, attending the team’s friendly against the English Football League’s Burnley FC at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

However, J.J. Watt was not pleased the team’s caption, which failed to mention the name of Kealia Watt, who’s not only a Utah native but also a legendary soccer player.

“Welcome to the Riot, @JJWatt and fam ,” the team captioned a photo of them at the match on X, along with their son Koa, one of the two children the couple has.

J.J. Watt, who quote tweeted the photo, criticizing the post, listed Kealia Watt’s accomplishments and called on the team to respect her name.

“The woman in the photo grew up literally down the road, won 4 Utah state championships (1 in this exact stadium), Gatorade Player of the Year twice, National Player of the Year, scored the fastest first goal in USWNT history… Could probably be worth a mention, but idk,” he wrote in response on July 16.

About four hours later, the team, which defeated Burnley, 4-1, apologized for the “honest mistake” in a post that Watt himself reposted.

“We made an honest mistake yesterday and we are sincerely sorry for that,” the team wrote on X. “When we welcomed the Watt family to America First Field, we should have recognized Kealia Watt for exactly who she is.”

In their apology post on X, Real Salt Lake also shined a light on Kealia Watt’s experience, running down some of the amazing things she has done on the pitch.

“Kealia is a Utah native and one of the most decorated players to ever come out of this state,” the post said. “Kealia won four state championships with her club and four more in high school, and was a two-time Utah Gatorade Athlete of the Year. She was a U.S. youth national teamer at 13. At the U-20 level, she scored the game-winning goal in the World Cup final.”

The team added that Kealia Watt “started four years at North Carolina, won a national title with the Tar Heels, then went No. 2 overall in the NWSL draft to the Houston Dash, and was the franchise’s first-ever college pick.”

The team went on to point out in the post that the soccer star later became the captain of the Houston Dash, making a total of 114 appearances and 28 goals, finishing her career with the Chicago Stars, formerly known as the Red Stars. Kealia Watt, as the post pointed out, is currently a soccer analyst for Amazon Prime Video.

“@KealiaOhai ,@JJWatt— we are deeply sorry. Thank you for all you do for the sport,” the team said in a post.

Watt tamped down any controversy in commenting on the apology.

“Respect and appreciate taking ownership of it. Best of luck the rest of your season,” he wrote.

J.J. Watt is certainly a proud husband. In his post about his family’s tour around America First Field, he pointed out that Kealia Watt closed out her high school career on that very ground.

“Showing Koa where mom won her 4th straight state championship,” he captioned a quartet of pictures of the family on the field.

The Watts, incidentally, are investors in Burnley, which was relegated from the English Premier League in April.

“When you invest in a club that’s been around since 1882, you must have great respect for its history and tradition,” the couple said while announcing their involvement with the team in 2023. “We understand that not only are we investing in the squad and manager, we’re investing in the town and its people. We take that responsibility very seriously and intend to work hard in earning their trust and support.”
