A man who is fighting for his life after an alleged assault in Wythenshawe was 'pushed' before he fell and hit his head on the pavement, it is currently believed.

It comes as locals spoke of their shock at what happened.

Police said they were called to Brownley Court Road, off Hollyhedge Road in Benchill, at around 10:30am this morning (Friday, July 24).

They found a man in his 40s with an injury to his head who was taken to hospital in a 'life-threatening condition.'

A 46 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting causing grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The Manchester Evening News understands it is currently believed that two men bumped into each other in the street, before one 'pushed' the other, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

Brownley Court Road was taped off with the cordon remaining in place for several hours on Friday as emergency services dealt with the incident and carried out enquiries.

Locals spoke of their shock at what happened. "It is awful" one woman, who did not want to be named, said. She said the area was being plagued by a number of 'undesirable people' and 'dodgy characters' adding: "It's really bad."

A neighbour said: "You just wouldn't expect something like that, especially at the time. It's quiet around here."

Another man said: "I came out and saw all the tape. I wasn't surprised, this is Benchill. It's rough. It's so bad though. Terrible. You just don't want to see it."

In a statement issued earlier today, GMP said: "Officers are responding to reports of an assault at around 10:30am this morning (24/07/26) on Brownley Court Road in Wythenshawe.

"Upon attendance, they have located a man in his 40s with an injury to his head, and he has been taken to hospital for treatment. He remains there in life-threatening condition

"One man, aged 46, has been arrested on suspicion of Section 20 assault and remains in custody for questioning."
