Democratic lawmakers are demanding answers after the reported detention of a West Hartford restaurant owner by immigration agents, saying they have been unable to determine why he is being held.
The owner of Portobello Restaurant on Park Road in West Hartford, Seyo Cecunjanin, was reportedly taken into custody last week. According to the office of U.S. Rep. John Larson, Cecunjanin was detained outside a Dunkin’ location nearby. Records indicate he is being held at the Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island.
Employees and family members gathered with lawmakers outside West Hartford Town Hall on Monday, where they called for more information about Cecunjanin’s detention. Larson and other elected officials described the detention as unlawful and called for Cecunjanin’s immediate release.
Employee Dee Abraham said she quickly realized the impact Cecunjanin had on those around him.
“Within weeks of working for him I knew I was working for someone remarkable and that it was something I wanted to be behind,” Abraham said.
Cecunjanin’s son, Emir Cecunjanin, described the moment his father was taken into custody.
“Out of nowhere 5 unmarked cars came out of nowhere and surrounded me my father and brother,” Cecunjanin said.
He said he pleaded with officers before his father was taken away.
“Even though I was pleading with the officers, it came to no avail, and they took him away like the snap of a finger,” Cecunjanin said.
Larson criticized the lack of information surrounding the detention.
“This isn’t China, this isn’t Russia, this is West Hartford, Connecticut, in the United States of America, and in America, everyone has rights,” Larson said.
Larson also highlighted Cecunjanin’s longstanding ties to the community.
“A man who has been here for 27 years, owns two businesses, and has been a pillar of the community,” Larson said.
During the news conference, Larson was asked about a legal path to citizenship, leading to a heated exchange.
“That’s why we need comprehensive immigration reform, a bill Senator Murphy submitted, a bill that was adopted in the Senate by an overwhelming majority, until the tyrant in the white house said don’t take it up,” Larson said.
Not everyone at the event agreed with calls for Cecunjanin’s immediate release. West Hartford resident Mark Walsh said he also wants more information before drawing conclusions.
“When you ask the elected or appointed officials what they were arrested for, they don’t know,” Walsh said.
“We need patience to get all the information, before we have a grandstanding event to create a narrative,” Walsh said.
For Cecunjanin’s family, the focus remains on bringing him home.
“I just want my father to come home, he is a good man, not a criminal,” Cecunjanin said.
NBC Connecticut has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for information about the case and they responded with a statement:
On June 20, ICE arrested Sead Cecunjanin, a criminal illegal alien from Montenegro with a previous DUI conviction. Cecunjanin illegally entered the United States on March 21, 1997, presenting a fraudulent passport of a Dutch national. On September 25, 1997, a Justice Department immigration judge issued him a final order of removal. On July 30, 2024, Cecunjanin departed the United States for Serbia, only to return about two weeks later on August 16. He was promptly RELEASED back into the United States under the Biden Administration—despite having a final order of removal over 25 years old.
