Amelia Dupear is running the Mini Great North Run in memory of her older brother James, who died aged three in 2022

Little Amelia Dupear was only 18-months-old when she lost her older brother James. However, she'll take on the the mini Great North Run this year both to make his memory live on, and to raise money for a good cause.

Amelia's mum Sophie Dupear, 30, established Jamesie's Mission after losing her three-year-old son on June 29, 2022 to a cardiac arrest. Though Sophie gave him CPR and medics eventually managed to restart James's heart, after three days in the Great North Children's Hospital at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, the family made the heartbreaking decision to switch off his life support.

Four years later and Amelia, now five, is running the 1.4km Mini Great North Run in the hope of raising money for parents whose children are in hospital. Her training is mostly in the garden of her South Shields home, or in the park nearby.

Mum Sophie said: "She likes to walk, so we go to park run and things like that. One of her friends has started doing park runs, so she's asked to do that as well.

"1.4km is just short of a mile, and when we're training she's always knackered at the end!"

Sophie says that Amelia doesn't have memories of her brother, but she understands that he has passed away. She describes James as 'the most loving child you could ever have met'.

She said: "The memories are basically what we show her. She knows who he is and she misses him and knows she's doing it for him."

"She did it last year as well, she asks about him but fortunately for us, she doesn't have that grief element because she was so little when it happened. This is about spreading a little bit of love from James."

Sophie says that she is incredibly proud of Amelia, and described her as 'cheeky' and a 'tough little cookie'.

Amelia has a modest target of £250 to raise towards Jamesie's Mission. Funds raised will go towards preparing "parent packs" for the first hours when parents are in hospital with their children.

Thinking back to June 2022, Sophie said: "You literally arrive with the clothes on your back and a phone and don't think you'll be there for X period of time. The strain of being in hospital with unwell children financially goes unnoticed, you have to pay for car parking, come out of work, and a high percentage of people don't get paid.

"You can be there for days spending lots on food and drink in the hospital. We had to make sure we were looking ourselves as well as the situation in hand at the time."

Sophie says that the parent packs will include Coffee vouchers, reusable cups, and phone chargers, amongst other things. The mum-of-three also wants to continue 'toy drives' at Christmas; and donating cuddle cots and blankets to the RVI.
