A man in his 80s has tragically died in a crash on the A1 in Northumberland, after a car collided with a transporter lorry. A woman in her 70s is also in a critical condition following the incident on the southbound side at Belford, just after 4.10pm on Friday.

It has been reported that, for reasons yet to be established, a white Hyundai i30 car, joining the A1 from the junction with the B1342, hit a car transporter lorry which was travelling south. Emergency services attended, with the driver sadly pronounced dead at the scene, and his family having now been informed, and supported by police officers.

The female passenger was found to have sustained serious injuries, and she was taken to hospital by air ambulance, where she remains at this time. A section of the A1 was closed for several hours, so that recovery and investigative work could take place, but it has since fully re-opened.

A full investigation has now been launched by Northumbria Police, with Sergeant Alex Partington, of the Roads Policing Unit, saying: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are firmly with the family and friends of the man who sadly lost his life in yesterday’s collision. We are now carrying out a range of enquiries to ascertain exactly what took place.

"As part of our investigation, we’d like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, in particular those with dash cam footage of the moments leading up to the collision. If you do have information which could assist us in our enquiries, please get in touch."
