The New York Mets are losing All-Star first baseman to the Baltimore Orioles, who have agreed to a reported five-year, $155 million deal with the former National League Rookie of the Year.

Although the deal has been reported by multiple outlets, the Orioles have yet to officially announce the agreement. 

The 31-year-old Alonso had been linked to the Boston Red Sox, as well as the Mets, but after a disappointing last-place finish in the American League’s Eastern Division, the Orioles were motivated to invest in their lineup.

Alonso is the second major free agent to leave the Mets in as many days, following closer Edwin Diaz, who is going to the two-time defending-champion Los Angeles Dodgers on a reported three-year, $69 million deal.

Interestingly, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported the Mets never made a formal offer to Alonso after ‘it became clear to them the bidding was heading to places they weren’t interested in going.’ 

Daily Mail has reached out to Mets spokespeople for a response to that report.  

Alonso had signed a two-year, $54 million deal to stay in Queens last winter, but the deal included a player option, allowing him to opt out and hit the free-agent market this winter. 

Despite missing the playoffs, Alonso had another productive season for the Mets, hitting 38 home runs and driving in 126 runs as New York fell just short of a postseason berth. 

Alonso surpassed Darryl Strawberry as the Mets’ all-time home run leader in August and now has 264 for his career, all of which has been spent in Queens.

A second-round pick out of the University of Florida in 2016, the hard-hitting righty known as the ‘Polar Bear’ has been at the heart of the Mets’ lineup since 2019, when he won Rookie of the Year honors while bashing a rookie-record 53 home runs. 

The Mets now in the precarious position of needing a powerful bat in the middle of their order, as well as a replacement for Alonso at first base.

Third baseman Mark Vientos could theoretically switch corners, allowing the Mets to pursue free-agent third baseman like Boston’s Alex Bregman or Seattle’s Eugenio Suarez.

The Mets could also target Yankees free-agent outfielder Cody Bellinger, who has experience at first base and is coming off a solid season in the Bronx with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs.

Alonso now joins a lefty-heavy Orioles lineup that includes infielders Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday, not to mention catchers Adley Rutschman and rookie Samuel Basallo.
