Gen Z is combining multiple income streams to future-proof work in an uncertain environment

Gen Z professionals are rethinking their careers, driven by flexibility, AI fluency and multiple income pathways, rather than a single linear job, says new research from International Workplace Group (IWG), a provider of flexible workspaces. The IWG research finds that rather than relying on a single employer or role, Gen Z is increasingly building “portfolio careers”, combining multiple income streams to future-proof work in an uncertain economic and technological landscape. It says 33 per cent of Gen Z workers already have, or are considering a side hustle to increase their financial security. This shift is closely tied to the growing influence of AI, with 55 per cent believing it will reshape their careers.

In response, young professionals are proactively developing new skills and diversifying their income sources to stay adaptable as roles continue to evolve. The study reports that 65 per cent say they would be less likely to pursue entrepreneurship or multiple income streams if required to commute long distances daily.

Millennials in the C-suite

Millennials now represent 55 per cent of India’s C-suite, making them the largest generational cohort among senior executives, finds the latest platform data from professional network LinkedIn. Millennial representation in India’s C-suite has grown 14.5 per cent over the last seven years. More interesting is the finding that single industry experience among India’s C-suite leaders has dropped from around 80 per cent to 58 per cent, pointing to a leadership market where exposure across companies, functions and business contexts matters more. The LinkedIn research also finds that AI is adding urgency to this shift, with 84 per cent of Indian C-suite leaders saying it is creating new roles in their organisation. Leaders are also using AI more directly in decision-making, with 84 per cent saying inputs from AI tools are now a key step.
