Thursday is an ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day; the team will be tracking the potential for severe storms with all threats possible. A Tornado Watch is in effect for Macon Co. until 9:00 p.m., and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for the rest of Mid-Missouri until 9:00 p.m. The main concerns will be damaging winds between 60-70 mph and a few tornadoes.

Redevelopment of low pressure to the west is lifting the boundary back to the northwest, allowing for instability to rebuild through the day. The cold front will move in during the early evening and late afternoon, firing storms that will take advantage of abundant instability and sufficient wind shear. Storms will likely pose a severe threat shortly after development.

Storms along and north of I-70 will have the greatest support for organization and rotating updrafts. This increases our expected storm intensity in the north, but all will see a chance of strong to severe storms.

TIMING:

A cold front and greater storm coverage arrive late in the day and into the evening as instability is maximized across the region ahead of the front.

IMPACTS:

Our main concern for Thursday will be the increased chance of severe storms across more of the region, and greater intensity in the Level 3 region. Threats include hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
