Tributes have been paid to members of a family, including a baby girl, who lost their lives in a devastating collision.
A Gambian family from Leeds have been identified locally as those killed in a crash on the A38 near Derby, which claimed four lives.
The Gambia High Commission in the UK, along with The Gambian Welfare Society (TGWS) in Leeds, has paid tribute to 36 year old Abu Camara and his family members, who perished in the tragic incident on Saturday night (July 25).
Mr Camara, his wife, their seven-month-old daughter, and an 18 year old woman, believed to also be a family member, died when a red Hyundai left the carriageway near Toyota Island and struck a tree.
Officers confirmed that a 36 year old man, alongside two women aged 18 and 30, were pronounced dead at the scene following the collision, which occurred at around 11pm, reports Derbyshire Live.
A baby girl was subsequently rushed to hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The driver – a 33 year old man – was also hospitalised with serious injuries, where he remains at present.
He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been bailed.
In a Facebook post, a spokesperson for The Gambian Welfare Society in Leeds said the "community in Leeds, especially the Sarahuleh community, has been struck by a devastating tragedy."
They described Mr Camara as a "dedicated servant of his community" who was passionate about supporting a new mosque and mentoring young children at football. "He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service," they added.
The High Commission of The Gambia in the UK also responded to the tragedy, confirming that four Gambian nationals had lost their lives in the incident.
" According to information received, the four individuals were travelling together from Birmingham to Leeds when their vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. All four occupants sadly lost their lives," a spokesperson said.
"Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Kingdom, together with the staff of the High Commission, extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families during this difficult time.
"The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr Suntou Touray, has spoken with the President of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds, Mr Yanks Sawo, to convey the High Commission's condolences and to coordinate with the family's liaison representative.
"The High Commission remains in contact with the relevant authorities and the affected families and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
"May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace."
