I will be very honest and open with you, readers. I didn’t think anything beyond headphones would improve a virtual reality experience. But here we are.

The VR3000 from developer Final brings a VR audio solution to the forefront. The simple design of the VR3000, which is essentially two IEM-like earbuds with a mic attached, is as useful as it is innocuous. Light as a feather with its design, and powerful as a mid-tier IEM solution with its execution, there’s a lot to love about what the VR3000 brings to the audio table in a VR experience. Also, it works beyond those defined confines.

Design
I have been playing VR games since the first Oculus dev kit and have never found a comfortable audio solution. Typically, audio solutions either make your ears sore or they make your head sore, one of the two, sometimes both. In terms of functionality, audio device manufacturers do their best to isolate sound with airtight earbuds or pad the gaps between ear cups, but no one has delivered that light-as-a-feather feel in good audio solutions. With the VR3000, this isn’t the case.

The earbuds fit firmly in your ear, as an IEM would. They’re solid, comfortable, and don’t wear on the ear like headphones or earbuds from other manufacturers. Even after hours of play on them, they didn’t give me that typical sore feeling in my ears that I get from an earbud experience. For example, the PSVR2 built-in earbuds are great for about an hour, then they get annoying and sometimes even unbearably sore. It went through hell and high water to enjoy Gran Turismo 7 in VR, but I am not sure I would stay so committed considering the earbuds. In comparison, the VR3000 delivers a comfortable experience that simply does not cause any issues within the ear or otherwise. It’s a constant comfort that extends the experience, which is a huge plus in my book.

In addition, they literally don’t feel like they’re there. There were times when I had to remind myself that I have two earbuds and a mic strapped around my head because they were light and unimpeded the audio experience. My $300+ IEMs deliver that type of comfort and lightweight-ness. The VR3000 comes in at 20g, which means it won’t add weight or fatigue to your ears. That’s doubly helped by the way they were designed to hook around the ears. I never knew I needed that type of design until I reviewed my first IEMs years ago. It works well and ensures, especially with body movement, that the earbuds will not slip out of place. Lightweight-ness and comfort mean that the experience is guaranteed to be phenomenal, which leads me to my next point about the device’s design – immersion.

An audio experience in VR should not be uncomfortable, nor should it ever take the player out of their virtual experience. The idea behind the technology is to keep the player immersed in the world, both visually and audibly.  The VR3000 is as advertised, with its design to ensure that the player stays within the audio boundary set by the technology. When audio devices don’t get in the way of the VR experience, then that’s a good thing. You never want audio, or any other device, getting in the way of an immersive VR gaming experience. The VR3000 just pleasantly disappears into the virtual world, as it should.

Functionality
The functionality of the VR3000 is built on style and simplicity. The earbuds have an impedance of 18 ohms, which means they deliver great sound by drawing more electrical current. This allows for sound to be easily cranked without using much power in the process. It also prevents a large power drain from a VR device, such as a Meta Quest 3. If you have ever played VR with a wireless device, power drain is a real concern, and there is nothing more annoying than stopping in the middle of an experience to hook up a wire or just give the process a rest. The VR3000 doesn’t do much to help drain the VR headset’s battery. That’s a big plus, especially when it’s delivering quality sound.

The driver built into the VR3000 is dynamic. This means the earbuds are packed with a coil, a magnet, and a diaphragm. If you didn’t know, and you might know this because you’re interested in an audio solution, the dynamic driver is most commonly used in high-end audio experiences. It delivers great bass, good audio power, and helps keep the player immersed in the experience. For the VR video game world, getting that deep bass right is a must, especially in first-person shooters (or anything with good music – or both). Feeling the moment is a combination of good audio and visuals. Both should be solid, and the VR3000 all but ensures it’s part of that deal.

In addition to the ohms and driver, the VR3000 brings with it a sensitivity rating of 101, which means you’re going to get good volume out of it. This also guarantees that if you go beyond just VR, you’re getting good stuff delivered and well controlled by your phone, computer, or tablet. There is nothing quite as annoying as having earbuds have limits on certain devices. I have experienced this with Amazon Earbuds before and wasn’t thrilled at all.

Anyway, during my time with the VR3000, I found the earbuds quite delightful. In a virtual reality experience, they worked as advertised and provided unrivaled comfort. If the Meta Quest I was using didn’t feel like a suction cup on my face, I could have played all day with those earbuds.

Now, beyond VR, I also tried these on a Zoom call. As mentioned before, it did make me feel like I was giving a TED Talk to my colleagues on the call, but the microphone, which is a condenser mic, picked up and delivered a solid audio response that was untouched by any imperfections. Even my scraggly beard and chipmunk cheeks couldn’t prevent the mic from delivering good sound. While these earbuds probably won’t be my go-to for Zoom calls like this, they work great as a backup and deliver the same audio quality as they do in a VR experience, minus the fun that comes with that experience.

While the product is named VR3000, it can be used in a variety of ways and on different systems. Each still brings the same comfort, lightweight feel, and sound quality. No beats are missed with these, as they work on various platforms. It certainly makes a difference for me on the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. While the Switch is an option, c’mon…no one is online chatting with their friends on that platform. Let’s be real. Anyway, kidding aside, my point with this ramble is that the VR3000 is more than just a VR audio solution, which makes it even more useful and impressive.

On that note, let’s wrap up this review.

Conclusion
The VR3000 (with condenser mic) from developer Final is an absolute treat. It’s comfortable, immersive, and light as a feather, while also packing quite the audio punch. It should be a go-to solution for VR gaming, as well as considered for other platforms.
