A supermarket that was the cheapest of the lot for essentials 18 months ago is now the most expensive.
With a bill of £13.53 for a basket of essentials including bread and milk, Morrisons is charging more than the other main retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Aldi and Lidl.
Our price comparison looks at the cost of key items and takes into account the supermarkets' budget ranges including Tesco's Stockwell products, Asda's Just Essentials, Sainsbury's Stamford Street and Morrisons' Savers.

Over recent weeks, the other supermarkets have reduced the cost of their tea bags to price match Aldi's price drop, with its popular Diplomat Red Label brand down from £1.85 to £1.65 for a box of 160.
However the price at Morrisons hasn't budged, and at 92p for a box of 80 Savers tea bags, shoppers are paying the equivalent of £1.84 for 160.
Back in January 2025, when Morrisons was the cheapest in our comparison, its bill came to £12.34 for the eight items, which as well as bread, milk and tea bags, also includes coffee, butter, beans, chicken breasts and beef mince.
Lidl, which last week dropped the price of its Knightsbridge Red Label Tea down from £2.75 for a box of 240, to £2.45, equating to £1.63 for 160, is one again cheapest in our comparison, which has tracked prices since 2022.
Aldi is in second place at £13.13, followed by Asda at £13.29, Sainsbury's at £13.37 and Tesco at £13.50.
Not all retailers agree with our findings. Aldi has always argued that the products aren't like-for-like, saying its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and its coffee are of 'higher quality' than the comparative products used and its tins of beans are heavier than some of the other retailers'.
An Aldi spokesperson told the M.E.N: “Our customers know they can always count on us for great value across the board, without needing to join a club or show a loyalty card. That’s why Which? has named us Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for five years running.”
Sainsbury's also says the 'review of a limited number of products does not reflect the fantastic value' customers will find in store and says it's 'committed to offering customers great choice and value when they shop with us'.
A spokesperson for Asda said: "Asda is delivering unbeatable value on the products families buy most, from everyday essentials to the big brands they know and love.
"With thousands of products already cheaper than Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, including their loyalty card prices, independent surveys consistently recognise Asda as the best-value full-range supermarket, with low prices available to all."
Morrisons says it 'remains committed to providing good, honest value' and is 'working hard to keep prices down and competitive so customers can spend less while still enjoying the quality Morrisons is famous for'.
A spokesperson said: "In addition, our More Card members can earn five More Points on every product in store, online and in Morrisons Daily stores and also benefit from personalised offers and money-off coupons on the things they buy the most of.
"For example, this weekend customers can purchase a Walkers multipack crisps box (20 x25g) for just £3.50 down from £5.25 (ends 26th July). Customers to our cafés can also take advantage of a range of offers such as our Kids Eat Free promotion, which runs every day, or free refills on all hot drinks.”
