A Shenandoah road trip shows the valley was America's first frontier

It’s summer, and many Virginians are planning a vacation— driving to the beach or the mountains as fast as legally possible. But for two college professors, the goal is to go slowly. They’re taking the back roads, stopping at small museums and monuments to better understand the important role played by the Shenandoah and valleys to its north and south. They call it America’s first frontier.
