The official notice on the subject was submitted to the UN secretary-general
NAIROBI, July 27. /TASS/. The government of Chad has made the decision to exit the International Crominal Court (ICC), the republic’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
The official notice on the subject was submitted to the UN secretary-general. The government of Chad explained that it took the step due to what it called the court's limited efficiency and bias. According to the agency, nine out of 13 cases currently being pursued by the organization involve African countries, and six out of seven suspects currently in custody have been detained in connection with Africa-related cases.
According to N’Djamena, the court has long remained focused on countries of the Global South, Africa in particular. This facilitates this institution’s use for politically-motivated reasons.
"Statistical data published by the court itself are particularly illustrative with regard to the court’s bias," the statement reads.
The ministry added that the decision to withdraw from the ICC is final. However, it does not mean that Chad is no longer committed to fighting impunity and seeking justice for victims of brutal crimes. In this context, the government of Chad urged the African Union and its member countries to expedite the creation of African judicial mechanisms. The government expects that this will help to create a more fair, balanced and efficient system of justice taking into account the sovereignty of African nations.
Chad ratified the Rome Statute, the foundational international treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC), in 2006. In line with the document, the decision to exit the organization officially comes into force a year after the UN secretary-general receives a corresponding notice.
