The Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission has unanimously approved the Old Greenwich Farmers Market's move to St. Catherine's on Riverside Avenue, allowing the continued use of tents at the property.

GREENWICH  — The Old Greenwich Farmers Market has received final approval to relocate to the parking lot at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside.

The Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously approved the market's move to St. Catherine's on Riverside Avenue, allowing the continued use of tents at the property.

The market had operated at Living Hope Community Church on West End Avenue in Old Greenwich, but planned construction at the church prompted organizers to find a new location.

Dana Lee, the market's co-founder and manager, told commissioners the St. Catherine's parking lot was the best option after exploring several sites.

"Most of the churches in town offered," she told the commission. "The one that made the most sense was St. Catherine's, because they have that giant parking lot."

Lee said the previous location had long been challenging because of limited parking, and upcoming construction would further disrupt operations.

The market operates Wednesday afternoons and typically hosts 12 to 15 vendors selling Connecticut-grown produce, prepared foods, crafts, jewelry and other products.

According to Lee, the market is busiest during its first hour, when it typically attracts about 50 shoppers before attendance gradually tapers off over the four-hour event.

The new location provides about 70 on-site parking spaces, with roughly 30 additional spaces nearby.

Planning & Zoning Commission Chairwoman Margarita Alban said the market serves an important community role.

 "We want you to be successful," she said. "People love having a farmers market, and we just want it to be seamless in the neighborhood."

Commissioners said they wanted to ensure noise would not become an issue for nearby residents.

Resident Ashley Cole endorsed the market. 

"The farmer's market is a great part of community culture for Greenwich, and to have access to fresh fruit and vegetables and these lovely vendors. Dana does a great job, and she's incredibly responsible. ... It's a good thing for everybody."

The Old Greenwich Farmers Market has operated for 16 years and has already begun holding its Wednesday markets at the Riverside location.
