GREENWICH — The town's school system has finally found a place to park its 90 school buses after a year of searching for a spot.
Starting Aug. 1, all of Greenwich Public School's school buses will be parked on a lot on Selleck Street in Stamford.
Greenwich school officials have tried for months to find a long-term solution to the parking problem that arose last year after DATTCO was brought on as the new school bus provider. They replaced First Student, which parked its vehicles on the same Selleck Street lot through a lease with the property owner.
The district will pay $750,144 to park the buses in the privately owned lot from Aug. 1 through June 30, 2027, said Jonathan Supranowitz, spokesperson for the school district.
That property was not available to Greenwich Public Schools for the school year that just ended and since DATTCO did not have a local lot for its buses, officials had to find a place to keep the vehicles.
The short-term solution was to park the buses across three locations. More than 30 buses were parked on a grassy area near the playing fields of Western Middle School, while another 30 or so were at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, which offered to help the school district with its parking issue.
Another 24 buses have been parked on the far east end of the lot at the Old Greenwich train station, on the New York-bound side. Buses will continue to be parked at the station until Aug. 1 and will be used for summer school, Supranowitz said.
Supranowitz said all of the buses that had been parked at the church have now been relocated to other school districts for summer school. Further, the buses at Western will be parked in the school's parking lots, not on grass, up until the Selleck Street lease begins next month.
Kevin Conway, president of the residents association at the Gables, said in an email to Greenwich Time that the upcoming relocation of the buses was "welcome news to Old Greenwich Gables residents who have been impacted over the last year with constant beeping noise, idling bus exhaust fumes and driver activities at all hours from the buses parked in the Metro North parking bordering the property."
School officials looked at dozens of options to park the school buses during the school year, but repeatedly ran into issues such as zoning, space restrictions or possible neighbor complaints. One option, an empty lot underneath Interstate 95 in Cos Cob, seemed promising until state officials denied the request for safety reasons.
In an email to the Western Middle School community on June 30, Superintendent Toni Jones shared the news that the buses would no longer be at the school.
"Although we had hoped this would have happened many months ago, we know that the reasons behind what we did was for the long-term betterment of the transportation department and district budget," she wrote. "The cooperation and patience from the entire Western Middle School community is very much appreciated."
She said the town's Parks and Recreation Department will attempt to restore the grassy area at Western where the buses were parked.
Jones wrote that DATTCO will provide new buses next school year, as well as "a more competitive pricing structure," she wrote.
The district switched to DATTCO when the previous provider wanted to increase the rate.
"We remain grateful that DATTCO was willing to sign a two year contract at the last minute last year when other providers would not," Jones wrote. "As a result, they mobilized mostly older buses from across their Connecticut fleet to get GPS up and running this year. We are looking forward to a much improved start to the school year."
