Geelong coach Chris Scott looks a lot calmer than he was during the game when he pulled a phone line out of the wall.

He puts the high-scoring game to "a good opposition".

He called it "a really strange game".

"To concede eight goals early in a game ... we fed their game way too much.

"If you give them (Brisbane) goals, they're going to kick some goals anyway.

"If you do that, they're going to be hard to stop."

He praised the Lions for really taking their chances, but said "for more than 50 per cent of the game we were in control, but we didn't take our chances or allowed them back in the game with basic errors."

AFL premiers Brisbane resisted a remarkable Geelong fightback in a see-sawing battle to surge into the top four with a 22-point statement win over their great modern rivals.

The Lions kicked the first eight goals of the game but saw a 43-point lead slashed to just one before steadying in a 19.9 (123) to 14.17 (101) victory at Kardinia Park on Thursday night.

It improves Brisbane's record to 10-6 as they leapfrog the Cats (9-7) into fourth spot on the ladder.

The Lions, who were belted by Geelong to the tune of 41 points on home turf in May, have won four straight matches since their mid-season stumble and kicked triple-figure scores in each of them.

Will Ashcroft (32 disposals) and Lachie Neale (28) were key in their latest triumph, as was Brisbane's efficiency in attack, where Kai Lohmann kicked five goals.

Geelong dominated the inside-50 count (69-52) but coughed up goals from almost 50 per cent of the Lions' forward entries in the first three quarters.

Young key forward Logan Morris and the brilliant Zac Bailey (20 disposals) kicked three goals apiece.

Connor McKenna (two goals) did well as a defensive forward on Cats star Tom Stewart, and Darcy Gardiner blanketed Jeremy Cameron (four disposals) before hobbling off late with a hamstring injury.

Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield (five goals) kept his side in the contest, Bailey Smith (31 disposals) and Max Holmes (30) were major ball-winners, and Ollie Dempsey (two goals, 22 disposals) was busy on a wing.

Charlie Cameron sparked the Lions' hot start with two goals in the opening two minutes and the visitors piled on eight straight in a stunning early burst.

Brisbane shredded their opponents on turnover, with their first seven inside-50 entries resulting in majors.

Geelong eventually managed a response through Dangerfield moments before quarter-time and the skipper kicked another brilliant goal soon after the break.

Lions gun Lachie Neale copped an accidental knee from teammate Cam Rayner (24 disposals, one goal) and was sent off the field for a concussion test, which he passed, and was heckled by a Cats fan on his way to the change room.

It came as Geelong added 6.6 to 1.6 in the second term, including three goals from Shannon Neale, to slash the margin to seven points by half-time.

Despite another two majors from Dangerfield, the Lions flexed their collective muscle again with eight goals to four in the third quarter.

They turned for home 30 points in front and kept the Cats at arm's length in the final term.

Brisbane skipper Harris Andrews has spoken to Channel Seven after his team's crucial win over Geelong.

"I think we were eight, nine points up at half-time (even after Geelong's big second quarter) - if you'd told us before the game we'd have that lead (at half-time) I think we would have taken that," he said.

"And we were able to go ahead from there (and win)."

Andrews said as a defender, he was a "glass half-empty guy", who "didn't look beyond training next Tuesday".

Asked about the Lions' position going into the final stretch of the season, he said:

"It's an ongoing process. One thing I think we can hang our hats on the last couple of years, when the challenge comes we stand up."

Patrick Dangerfield had a huge game for Geelong, with five vital goals to keep his team in the game.

But the skipper is clearly frustrated with the loss, and he's spoken to Channel Seven about the start to the game.

"I think that's (the first quarter) the game, isn't it?" he said.

"There was also a patch in the third quarter where we didn't take our opportunities and they (the Lions) as a premiership team, they took theirs."

They have it in their forward half with under two minutes to go, and Geelong needs three goals.

The clock has ticked down with Brisbane trying to stop Geelong marks and run things.

But a desperate kick clears for the Cats, and 10-15 seconds later the ball is in Ollie Dempsey's hands in the pocket.

He kicks it! 16 points, 2:46 left. Can Geelong do it? Can Brisbane hang on?

We have just over 10 minutes on the countdown clock, and that could be a big moment.

Darcy Gardiner, who has been immense in the Brisbane backline, is limping off the ground with a possibly calf or hamstring issue.

The chances are going at both ends, and Jarrod Berry has taken a mark inside 50.

He has the set shot from in front, this is a big chance - but he misses to the right!

Still 23 points, four goals would win it for Geelong.

The pressure is rising steadily (if it wasn't already high) and Geelong go inside 50, and Shaun Mannagh has a snap from 30m out.

It curls, but too late and goes just to the right.

The lead is 22 points with 13 minutes on the clock.

That was a crazy few minutes, with the ball pinging from one end to another, with desperate tackles and risky passes and no one quite able to finish off movements.

Finally Geelong got the ball inside 50, it came off hands and fell to Ollie Wiltshire who ran on and snapped on the run, but it went just wide.

23 points the margin.
