As I look back on life, I find myself returning to simple proverbs and one-line sayings. They seemed ordinary when I was young, but many of them make more sense today than they ever did before.

When we are young, proverbs often sound like repetitive phrases uttered by parents, grandparents and teachers. We hear them so often that we stop paying attention. Only later, through experience, do we begin to understand what they really mean.

Many of us discover the importance of health at different phases of life. Some understand it when they are young, while others discover it only after an illness or a small discomfort. Looking back, I realise that “health is wealth” is not merely a saying. It seemed obvious when I was young, but as the years passed, I began to understand why people repeated it so often.

Growing up, I often heard elders urging us to take an oil bath every Saturday. It was more than a ritual. It was a reminder that health requires regular attention and care. In many ways, it served the same purpose that wellness apps and fitness trackers do today.

“Prevention is better than cure” reminds me of the moral stories we read in school. I understood the story as a child, but the realisation came much later. “A stitch in time saves nine” is another saying whose meaning became clearer with age. As adults, we realise it applies to almost everything. Whether it is a health check-up, a small home repair, or organising our finances, attending to such matters early often saves us from much larger problems later.

Some insights come not from elders but from the people we meet along the way. One of my friends who is exceptionally focused and pursues one goal at a time with complete dedication, often says, “Time is money.” Over time, I realised it applies to life itself. Time is the one resource we spend every day without knowing how much remains. The way we invest it determines what we accomplish, whom we spend our lives with, and ultimately who we become.

As years pass, I have come to appreciate how much wisdom is hidden in these simple sayings. Modern life often encourages us to search for new answers, but many of the old answers remain surprisingly relevant.

When we are young, we hear these proverbs without giving them much thought. As we grow older, we begin to understand why they have endured for generations. The challenge is not finding new wisdom. It is practising the wisdom we already know.
