Edmonton Police have confirmed a man found shot near a west-end business was the victim of a homicide and are asking the public for help identifying two vehicles which they believe were used in the attack.

Hiwa Palani, 39, died of gunshot wounds, confirmed a July 29 autopsy. Homicide investigators are now looking for information regarding two suspect vehicles used in tandem to flee the scene by a suspect.

Police say the suspect first used a grey 2009 Mazda 3 during the homicide and then drove it to 213 Street and 108 Avenue where the car was set ablaze. The suspect then took a 2007 red Ford Fusion to Ada Boulevard and 50 Street, where the second car was set on fire. Police believe the suspect then fled into the River Valley.

Witnesses put out the burning Mazda and Edmonton Fire Services extinguished the Ford. Both vehicles were found to have front body bumper damage.

Police were called to a west end business park in the area of 112 Avenue and 149 Street on Tuesday morning at 11:35 a.m. after getting reports of the shooting. When they arrived, they found Palani suffering from serious injuries. Emergency Medical Services took him to hospital, where he died.

EPS is asking anyone with CCTV or dashcams which were active in any of three areas related to the homicide between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 28 to review their footage for evidence of either vehicle or people associated with them.
