A busy road near a Derbyshire town centre has been closed by police.

A lone police car is blocking traffic on Nottingham Road, near its junction with Short Street, in Belper, which has caused queuing traffic around the town on Sunday morning (August 2).

Trentbarton has issued a statement confirming the closure is a result of a broken-down vehicle blocking Nottingham Road, which is a one-way route and is known to become congested during exceptionally busy periods.

A spokesperson for the bus firm said: "Due to a broken-down vehicle blocking Nottingham Road, Belper, the 6.3 service is currently unable to operate via its normal route and will be diverted via Marsh Lane and Chesterfield Road until further notice."

The following stops are unable to be served, with the service resuming its normal route from Belper Market Place:

• Short Street
• Rothwell Lane
• St John's Street
• Bradley Drive

Traffic has been seen travelling down the one-way route back towards Short Street, likely due to vehicle recovery taking place.

Drivers wishing to travel into Belper town centre from Nottingham Road can use the following route:

• Nottingham Road/Short Street/Spencer Road/Marsh Lane/Far Laund/Chesterfield Road
