Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter Kannur district of Kerala, leaving one person dead, two injured and two others missing so far, while 521 people have been shifted to eight relief camps as on Monday.

The rains have affected 32 villages, with flooding reported in 13 villages. Authorities have recorded five landslips, while no major landslides have been reported. The district has reported damage to 60 houses, including two that were completely destroyed and 58 that were partially damaged.

Pazhassi spillway shutters opened

Meanwhile, the Pazhassi barrage continued to discharge large volumes of water. At 8 a.m, the barrage recorded an inflow of 1,288.605 cubic metres per second and an outflow of 1,14.132 cumecs through the spillway. Water storage stood at 1.666 million cubic metres, with the water level at 16.75 metres. The catchment received 40.22 mm of rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 7 a.m.

Of the barrage’s 16 spillway shutters, 15 were open – most by 5 metres and three by 4.5 metres – while one shutter remained closed. All three Left Bank Canal (LBC) shutters remained fully closed.

Authorities have urged people living along riverbanks and low-lying areas to remain vigilant as heavy inflows continue into the reservoir.
