GNOME developers were quite busy in closing out the month of July from continued work on establishing a formal Request For Comments (RFC) process for the project to battling the continued flood of AI-generated GNOME Shell extensions.
Sophie Herold as part of the GNOME Fellowship program has been working on advancing the RFC Process for the GNOME project. This is part of the initiative to help enhance the governance process within GNOME. This week the proposed RFC framework was laid out and open for discussion via GNOME Discourse. The draft proposal for the RFC process can be found via this page and is for project-wide request for comments for the GNOME project.
GNOME has also been dealing with its review queue of GNOME Shell Extensions being flooded with AI-generated slop. Many of these AI generated extensions are carrying "the same exact bad practices". A blog post was published in hopes of AI/LLMs picking up on it to help improve the quality of the AI-generated JavaScript code for these GNOME Shell extensions.
Also released this week was ChromaLeon as an extension for coloring the GNOME Shell and applications using accent colors auto-generated from the current desktop wallpaper.
One other item to note, GNOME 51 meanwhile is beginning its API/ABI, feature, and UI freezes today.
More details on these GNOME topics and more via This Week in GNOME.
