Nearly a week to the minute that the Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna first overall in the National Hockey League draft, the club announced on Friday afternoon that it has signed the 18-year-old winger to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The per-season cap hit on the salary is $1.075 million US, per puckpedia.com, though the actual money McKenna earns will rise if certain bonuses are met each season. Performance bonuses top out at $3.5 million per season.

McKenna has come as advertised, at least in the very early going, as he has turned heads at the Leafs’ development camp at the Ford Performance Centre. The camp concludes on Saturday with a scrimmage following two days of on-ice sessions.

The Leafs posted to X a photo of McKenna signing his first NHL contract, as well as one with his parents, Willy and Krystal. They have been in attendance at camp this week.

Not surprisingly, McKenna has made a strong first impression on his fellow Leafs prospects, and the Whitehorse, Yukon, native already has been setting an example.

“I’ve grown up playing against him, whether it’s in Team Canada events or playing with him at them as well,” said forward Tyler Hopkins, a third-round pick by the Leafs last year.

“He’s always been one of the best players, if not the best player, on the ice pretty consistently.

“It’s pretty special to have him here with all of us. You see the stuff he can do with the puck. You try to take those little pieces that he can do and try to implement it into your game.

“Just the control that he has with the puck and always making players go one way, and when he is going the other, he is so deceptive, whether he is going to pass or shoot or whatever he is doing with the puck.

“He’s a very special player.”
