A United Airlines flight carrying 111 people narrowly avoided a drone while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport, with the pilot reporting the unmanned aircraft came within about 100 feet of the plane.
Pilot's Chilling Warning
A United Airlines pilot reported a frightening encounter with a drone while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday, warning air traffic controllers that the aircraft had 'almost hit a drone.'
The Boeing 737, which was flying from Key West, Florida, was carrying 106 passengers and five crew members when the incident occurred during its final approach.
According to air traffic control audio verified by CNN, the pilot described the drone as circular, approximately three feet wide, and flying about 100 feet below the aircraft. Despite the close encounter, the plane landed safely at around 5:30 p.m. local time, and passengers disembarked normally.
Another Drone Sparks Alarm
The United Airlines flight was not the only aircraft to report a drone that evening.
According to additional air traffic control audio, a pilot operating a United Express flight on behalf of GoJet Airlines also reported seeing a drone at roughly 2,000 feet while approaching Newark around the same time.
The back-to-back sightings have renewed concerns about unauthorized drone activity near one of the busiest and most complex airports in the United States.
FAA Warns of Growing Drone Threat
The Federal Aviation Administration prohibits drones from operating in controlled airspace or near manned aircraft without prior authorization.
According to the FAA, the agency receives approximately 100 reports of drone sightings near airports across the United States each month. Such incidents are treated seriously because drones operating close to commercial aircraft can pose a significant safety risk, particularly during takeoff and landing when pilots have limited time to react.
While the agency has not confirmed how close the drone came to the United Airlines aircraft, the reported proximity is expected to be reviewed as part of any investigation.
Drone Scare Adds to Newark's Woes
The latest drone sighting comes as Newark Liberty International Airport continues to face increased scrutiny over operational issues in 2026.
The airport has experienced several disruptions this year, including radar outages and air traffic control staffing shortages that led to temporary ground stops and prompted federal attention.
Although Friday's incident was unrelated to those problems, it adds to growing concerns surrounding safety in Newark's already congested airspace.
Questions Remain Unanswered
At the time of publication, the FAA had not commented on the reported drone sighting.
GoJet Airlines and Newark Liberty International Airport also had not responded to requests for comment. Authorities have not released any information about the drone's operator or whether an investigation has identified the source of the unauthorized flight.
