As a video producer, cameraman, and director of photography, I focus on the image, yet I know that if the audio sucks, no amount of pretty pictures can save the production. Audio is King/Queen.

The PD200W is a dynamic cardioid microphone, which means it’s designed to make the spoken voice easier to hear and to have a narrower pickup pattern that isolates a person’s voice from other noises. Close the distance, two to six inches, and it delivers a familiar result: slightly warm, forward, and controlled.

I found the Maono PD200W is forgiving. Untreated rooms, light background noise, less-than-ideal setups—the PD200W doesn’t amplify those problems the way many entry-level condensers do. The USB-C mode on the Maono PD200W includes onboard noise reduction.

This mode was probably the most useful for me. I found that I could plug in the Maono PD200W straight into my MacBook Pro or my iPhone 16. To me, this feature was super easy to use and control the mic. Bonus was using the Blackmagic Camera App to control my audio settings and gain on the PD200W.

The XLR input makes this mic more professional. I think many users already have XLR cables ready to use, as they are the tried-and-true go-to for getting audio to a recorder. It’s pretty hard to mess up with XLRs.

I think, for situations where a podcaster is traveling, the 2.4GHz wireless feature is the simplest option. This allows users to connect wirelessly to the Maona PD200W to a camera. A quick and easy set-up for sure.

I tested all three microphone outputs, and all worked well. I think, in my case, I’ll use the 2.4GHz wireless feature most often, but it’s nice to have a podcast mic I can plug straight into my MacBook Pro for Zoom and Teams calls. I like gear I can use in more than one situation. In the end, this is a very inexpensive microphone. There will be areas where Maono has to save on manufacturing costs.

I think the preamps are not quite as good as higher-end microphones, but that is to be expected. I also noticed that when speaking into the Maono PD200W, the cardioid microphone picked up my voice well when I spoke close to it. If the subject was too far to the left or right or too far away from the mic, the audio would suffer.

The Maono PD200W Hybrid Podcasting Microphone is practical gear. The kind that earns its place by continuing to be useful across scenarios where more specialized tools become inconvenient.
