Suspect in 2018 road rage murder and 2024 shooting appears in court

A Philadelphia man accused of shooting and killing a driver in fit of road rage eight years ago will be headed to trial.
Jihad Henderson, 38, appeared in a Montgomery County courtroom for the first time on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026.
Henderson is charged in the murder of 29-year-old Rithina Torn.
In October 2018, Torn was driving on Dewey Road and Front Street in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, when he was involved in a traffic dispute with another driver, later identified as Henderson, police said.
Torn got out of the car to confront Henderson who pulled out a gun and opened fire, according to investigators. Torn was shot multiple times. He was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later.
Torn’s friends heard the shooting and even saw the suspect’s car flee the scene, investigators said. Ballistic evidence from the crime scene was also entered into a national database.
“Similar to the APHIS, which is the National Fingerprint Database or the DNA CODIS Database,” Michael Mattson, a former prosecutor not affiliated with the case, told NBC10. “These are invaluable tools for law enforcement.”
Despite the evidence and police offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, Torn’s murder remained unsolved for years.
A break in the case then occurred six years later in October 2024 when police responded to a reported shooting in the parking lot of the Target store on the 800 block of Baltimore Pike in Springfield Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. When police arrived, they found a driver who had been shot in the neck. Surveillance video and evidence collected from the scene allowed investigators to identify Henderson as the suspect in that shooting.
Henderson was stopped a few days later by police in Fairfax City, Virginia, and investigators obtained a search warrant. Ballistic evidence from the shooting victim, the vehicle and the crime scene was also entered into the national database. Investigators then determined the bullets from the 2024 shooting and the bullets from the 2018 shooting all came from the same gun that Henderson purchased back in 2017.
“So it literally is similar to fingerprint evidence,” Mattson said. “Because these toolmarks are very unique.”
Henderson was charged with attempted murder in connection to the Delaware County shooting and surrendered to police in November 2024. His trial in the attempted murder case then began in April 2026.
During his trial, Henderson told prosecutors he had never given the gun he purchased in 2017 to anyone else and that he carried the firearm every day, officials said. That statement was used as new evidence in the 2018 murder case against Henderson, according to investigators.
Henderson was charged with murder in the first and third-degree as well as possession of an instrument of crime with intent in connection to the 2018 shooting.
During his court appearance on Wednesday, Henderson’s lawyer, David S. Nenner, argued the evidence against his client was tainted and improperly gathered. He also disputed the ballistics tests that were performed and argued the first-degree murder charges should be tossed out.
The judge did not agree, however, and held Henderson for trial on those first-degree murder charges.
Henderson is currently being held in Delaware County Prison.
