So these two whoppers are coming to our city in the Fall in separate shows.
Have you ever been to their live shows? Was it worth it? Did you like it? On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is a change-my-life-don't-miss-it experience and 5 is a go-see-it-if-you-ve-naught-else-that-evening, how would you rate it?

We have seen David Sedaris live several times. He is a great performer and funny as all get out. David usually reads new material and from his diary. He can/will be crude, so be ready for that. Not sure what to say about his fashion sense! Go and enjoy!

I've seen David Sedaris five or six times. I concur with what Gingerjules says. If you read a lot of his stuff, you may hear him read something you know (and it's great hearing these things in his voice), and he often reads essays from magazines and things he's currently working on (and takes notes as he does). He'll most likely sign books in the lobby afterward, and he'll stay until the last person gets through the line.

Counterpoint: I've seen David Sedaris a couple times - both times he was essentially the 'opener' for another act. It was pretty amusing, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see him perform again. Maybe a 4 on your scale.

I’ve seen David Sedaris maybe four times and if you like his writing, he does an enjoyable performance.

Agree with above but also that he tours pretty frequently so if you have to pick right now, would see Zadie.

I also saw him ten or so years ago. It was a large audience and everyone seemed to be having a great time. If you enjoy his writing, you will likely enjoy him live.

Not to abuse the edit window, I'm not familiar with Zadie smith, so I can't weigh in on her.

I’ve seen David Sedaris twice, most recently about two years ago and I wouldn’t see him again. I think Mo Nichols said it best - he hasn’t aged well. I was sad because I’ve always liked his stories and listening to him on This American Life, but he’s not as funny anymore and was sarcastic in a mean way.

I've never been to a Zadie Smith reading, but I've heard several of her interviews and she is witty and charming. If I had to pick one, I'd go for her.
