Learn how to properly attach a round wood table top to its base using smart, time-tested hand-tool techniques that prevent cracking and failure.

Summary: How do you attach a table top correctly? Center the base carefully, drill pilot holes, elongate screw holes across the grain, and fasten the top loosely so it can expand and contract with seasonal wood movement. This prevents cracks and failure over time. Of course, keep reading…

Introduction

Will Myers Showing How To Attach A Table Top

Learning how to attach a table top may seem like a no-brainer—until you see how many solid-wood tables fail because of it.

In this continuation video, traditional woodworker Will Myers demonstrates the correct, time-tested way to attach a table top to a pedestal base using only hand tools. This is one of the final steps in the build, and it’s one of the most important.

If you’ve already shaped your tabletop—like in our article 6 Steps to Make a Round Wood Table Top with Hand Tools—you know the job isn’t quite done. The table top has to actually be attached! But it needs to be attached in a way that will keep the table top from splitting.

Why It’s Easy to Attach a Table Top the Wrong Way

Wood moves. Always.

When you attach a table top, it must be allowed to expand and contract across the grain as humidity changes throughout the year. If the base restricts that movement, the result is predictable:

  • Cracks

  • Splits

  • Loose joints

  • Or complete failure

Furniture makers of the past understood this well—and their solutions are still the best ones today.

Step 1 – Centering the Base Before You Attach a Table Top

Before any screws go in, the base must be perfectly centered.

Will uses a fast, accurate trick that beats measuring every time.

The Nail-Centering Trick:
  1. Lightly eyeball the center of the table base.

  2. Drive in a small wire nail.

  3. Cut it off, leaving about 1/4″ proud.

  4. Place that nail into the center point marked on the underside of the table top.

This locks the base in the exact center while you mark screw locations—simple and foolproof.

Step 2 – Understanding Grain Direction When You Attach a Table Top

At first glance, the support board under the table top looks wrong because it runs across the grain.

Normally, that would cause cracking.

But Will plans ahead.

The key is allowing movement where it matters—at the screw holes.

Step 3 – Marking and Drilling Pilot Holes Safely

With the base centered, screw locations are marked with a pencil and deepened with an awl to prevent bit wander.

Hand Tool Tip:
Will uses an eggbeater drill with a piece of tape wrapped around the bit as a depth stop. This prevents drilling all the way through the finished table top—a mistake that hurts just to think about.

Step 4 – Elongating Screw Holes (The Most Important Step)

If you want to attach a table top that lasts, this step is non-negotiable.

After removing the base, Will elongates the screw holes using a rat-tail file.

Critical rules:
  • Elongate holes only in the direction of wood movement

  • Never side-to-side

  • Just enough to allow seasonal expansion

This creates a “floating” attachment that holds the top firmly while still letting the wood move naturally.

Step 5 – How to Attach a Table Top with Wood Screws

Using A Screw Driver To Attach A Table Top

With everything lined up again, the screws are driven in by hand.

Final adjustment matters:
  • Tighten the screws fully

  • Then back them off just slightly

This small detail ensures the table top can move. If it can move, it won’t split when the humidity in the air changes.

Why This Traditional Method Works

This approach has survived for centuries because it respects the material.

When you attach a table top using traditional methods, you’re working with the wood instead of fighting it. That’s why antique tables still survive today—and rushed modern builds often don’t.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why do screw holes need to be elongated when you attach a table top?
A: To allow wood movement and prevent cracking.

Q: Can I attach a table top without elongated holes?
A: You can—but it will likely split over time.

Q: How tight should the screws be?
A: Snug, then backed off slightly so the top can move.

Q: Does this method work for non-round tables?
A: Yes. The same principles apply to all solid-wood table tops.

Q: What happens if wood movement is ignored?
A: The table top will eventually crack or fail.

You seem to have forgotten the important point about using a cross grain under frame. Of course you don’t need elongated holes if you align your under frame with the grain. Both parts will shrink and swell, and no cracking. So why not do it that way? To make the underframe responsible for preventing cupping of the top of course. and THAT is the main reason to orient the parts as you show, and THAT is why you need to… Read more »
