Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,
The summary for policymakers of the IPBES Assessment of the Impact and Dependence of Business on Biodiversity and Nature’s Contributions to People (Business and Biodiversity Assessment) was approved and its chapters accepted by the Plenary at IPBES 12, held in Manchester, United Kingdom, from 3 to 9 February 2026. An advance unedited version of the summary for policymakers in all six official languages of the United Nations is already available at https://www.ipbes.net/business-impact, and the chapters of the assessment are expected to be published by the beginning of April 2026. The assessment has received wide coverage both in traditional media and on social media and is off to a great start when it comes to its reach.
Building on this momentum, and to catalyze further supportive efforts, I would like to invite Governments, organizations and individuals to support the uptake and use of the assessment.
Examples of concrete ways in which Governments, organizations and individuals can support uptake and use of the Business and Biodiversity Assessment include:
Develop practical guidance and convene workshops for decision makers at the regional, national and subnational levels on how to translate the options for action set out in the assessment report into policy, legislation, decisions and actions, with due regard to their specific contexts;
Convene workshops to foster cross-sectoral collaboration, including with the private sector, to implement relevant options for action set out in the assessment report and its summary for policymakers;
Develop training courses for formal and informal education settings focusing on the use of the assessment;
Develop fact sheets and other materials to support uptake of the assessment.
I also encourage Governments, organizations and individuals to continue their capacity-building efforts in support of IPBES. To support mutual learning and contribute to highlighting the uptake of IPBES assessments in your region, please share information on any activities or resources that have been developed with the aim of building capacities relevant to IPBES and its completed assessments at the following link: https://www.ipbes.net/support_to_building_capacity_submissions. All activities will be reported to the IPBES Plenary at its 13th session (second half of 2027).
To receive further information about the types of support that the IPBES secretariat and technical support units on capacity-building and policy support can offer to such events and activities, please contact the secretariat at: mea-ipbes-secretariat@un.org.
The success of IPBES depends on the support of Governments, organizations and individuals from all over the world, and as such I would appreciate your assistance in distributing this call widely to colleagues, email lists and networks.
I thank you for your continued support to IPBES.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Luthando Dziba | Executive Secretary
