Apple plans to allow third-party AI chatbots to operate within its Siri assistant, in addition to its existing deal with OpenAI developer ChatGPT, Bloomberg reported.

The “Extensions” system is reportedly planned to be announced officially at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference on 8 June, alongside other AI-related plans including a long-delayed revamp of Siri.

The system currently in development would reportedly allow AI apps installed via Apple’s App Store to integrate with Siri in the same way that ChatGPT can currently be called upon to handle Siri queries.

It was reportedly unclear whether any installed AI app would be able to integrate, or if an approval process would be involved.

ChatGPT has been available within Siri since the launch of Apple’s AI tools in 2024.

Apple is separately working with Google to rebuild the core functionality of Siri using Google’s Gemini technology.

The upcoming feature would, by contrast, allow users to access Gemini itself through Siri, if Google chose to allow the integration.

The arrangement could do away with the need for exclusive business deals such as the current one with OpenAI, and could allow Apple to gain a portion of AI tools’ subscription revenues.

As part of the Siri revamp, Apple is reportedly planning a stand-alone Siri app for the first time.
