Apple is testing a stand-alone app for its Siri voice assistant and an “Ask Siri” feature operating across its software, as part of broader plans to turn the tool into an LLM-powered chatbot, Bloomberg reported.

The updated Siri is expected to be announced on 8 June at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference as part of iOS 27 and macOS 27, two years after most of the planned features were first announced in 2024.

The features were first planned to launch in the spring of last year, but are currently expected to arrive in the autumn of this year, after Apple struck a multi-year deal with Google to use its AI technology to power the revamped Siri.

As part of the shift to a chatbot version of Siri, Apple is testing a dedicated Siri app for the iPhone, iPad and Mac operating system that would be similar to dedicated AI apps from other companies, the Bloomberg report said.

Its main interface reportedly gives users a central place to access previous chats and create new ones in a form similar to Apple’s Messages app.

Apple is reportedly testing interface changes that could replace the glowing-edges effect introduced in iOS 18, including putting Siri at the top of the screen within the Dynamic Island mini interface, giving the user the option to “Search or Ask”.

The company is looking to replace its Spotlight on-device search tool with Siri, with a search function that is to give users access to more types of on-device data, a feature delayed from last year.

The revamped Siri is planned to be able to access material from the web through online search features similar to Google’s Gemini or Perplexity.

A keyboard design being tested reportedly includes a “Write with Siri” button that makes it easier to access the existing Writing Tools feature.

The company is reportedly still testing the announced App Intents feature, which is planned to give users fine-tuned voice control over interface features such as scrolling.

The Siri delays have reportedly affected plans for other AI-powered products, such as a home display similar to Amazon’s Echo.
