From 1–7 June 2026, communities across the UK will come together to celebrate Volunteers’ Week. It’s a national campaign recognising the millions of people who give their time, skills and energy to help others. First launched in 1984, the annual event shines a spotlight on the incredible contribution volunteers make to organisations across the country.

Volunteering often happens quietly behind the scenes, but its impact is enormous. Dedicated volunteers fulfil varied roles including helping isolated elderly residents, supporting mental health charities, coaching grassroots football teams or organising local events.

One of the great things about volunteering is that there so many ways to get involved. Some people volunteer every week, while others help out occasionally at fundraising events or community projects. Whether you can spare an hour a month or several days a week, here are some popular volunteering ideas to consider:

  • Supporting local food banks or community kitchens
  • Helping at charity shops
  • Becoming a befriender for older or vulnerable people
  • Assisting at youth clubs or sports teams
  • Taking part in environmental clean-up projects
  • Volunteering at festivals, museums or local events
  • Offering professional skills such as marketing, admin, photography or IT support
  • Helping animal rescue centres and wildlife charities

Many organisations also use Volunteers’ Week as an opportunity to recruit new supporters by hosting open days, coffee mornings, volunteer fairs and community events.

Volunteering can benefit the volunteer as much as the people they support. Studies regularly show that volunteering can improve wellbeing, confidence and social connection, while also helping people gain new skills and experience. For students and job seekers, volunteering can also strengthen CVs and open doors to future opportunities.

Across the UK, thousands of charities and community groups will be sharing volunteer stories throughout the week to inspire others to get involved. Social media campaigns, thank-you events and local celebrations will all form part of the nationwide recognition effort.

If you have ever thought about volunteering, Volunteers’ Week 2026 could be the perfect time to start. Even small acts of kindness and support can make a lasting difference, both to local communities and to the people offering their time.
