The power of the arts to bring communities together was on full display this week as a painting by Dame Judi Dench sold for £6,900 during a charity auction supporting vulnerable people across Surrey.

The fundraising event, hosted by the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, raised more than £65,000 in total for the theatre’s creative learning and outreach programmes. The evening, titled Supper With The Stars, welcomed well-known guests including Richard Stilgoe, Isla Blair and radio presenter Peter Gordon.

The standout item of the auction was a watercolour painting of the Scottish Highlands created by Dame Judi. The actress, now 91, has previously spoken openly about the impact deteriorating eyesight has had on her daily life and career. According to the BBC, the painting is believed to be one of the last works she has completed due to her failing sight.

The auction highlighted the continuing appeal of celebrity memorabilia for charity fundraising. A collar and bow tie worn by David Suchet in his portrayal of Poirot sold for £650, while an Albert Square street sign signed by the cast of EastEnders achieved £275. A piano lesson with the Eastenders theme tune composer, Simon May, sold for £700.

But beyond the celebrity names and auction excitement, the event’s purpose was far more significant. Funds raised will support youth theatre projects, community programmes and creative opportunities for families and people facing financial barriers. The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre works with a wide variety of beneficiaries including schools catering for students with special needs, young carers, low-income families and isolated and vulnerable members of the local community.

Research from the Arts Council England has repeatedly highlighted the positive impact arts participation can have on wellbeing, confidence and social inclusion, particularly among young people and vulnerable communities. Many regional theatres now rely heavily on fundraising and charitable support to maintain these programmes as operational costs continue to rise.

David Beal, the theatre’s head of development, said: “We work with people across Surrey. Families, children, people who have experienced financial barriers, young carers and those with additional needs.

“We provide opportunities to engage with the theatre and arts in a broader sense. Most of the money from last night will go towards that work.”

The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre hopes to expand its youth theatre later this year, with ambitions to offer around half of all places free of charge. Events like this show how creativity, community spirit and a little star power can combine to make a meaningful difference.
