Lewiston police on Tuesday arrested a local man sought after a disturbance Sunday and a fire Monday at a home on Libby Avenue.

Treven Stoops, 38, was arrested Tuesday morning in Auburn on charges of domestic violence aggravated assault, obstructing the report of injury, and falsifying physical evidence, according to a corrections officer at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. In the afternoon, he was charged with arson, according to a release from the Office of State Fire Marshal.

Stoops’ bail was set at $5,000, the release said. He is expected to make his initial court appearance this week.

Police were looking for Stoops, who is listed with the jail as transient, after officers were called to a disturbance Sunday at 14 Libby Ave.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, a fire was reported at the same Libby Avenue location. As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze in the top floor of the home, police searched the area for Stoops.

No one was hurt in the fire, however several pet birds in the home perished, the fire marshal’s office said.

Due to the suspicious nature of the fire’s origin, the fire marshal was notified and responded to assist with the investigation, Lewiston police said.

The fire remains under investigation, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
